A very pleasing book on the cultures it covers

I am a little surprised to be the first person to be reviewing this book, for it has now been on the market for a while, and should - I feel - have elicited responses from a number of people. However, I realise that I have been slow myself, too! That is not for want of enthusiasm, for this is, it can unhesitatingly be said, a very good book in terms of what it does. Its major limitation is that it excludes (as is admitted on the jacket) Java, Bali, and West Papua. It would be possible to argue that jewellery from the first two is sufficiently "ethnic" (grounded in its own place and culture even if courtly) to warrant inclusion; and the omission of jewellery from West Papua, which is certainly "ethnic" in the fullest sense of the word, is surprising. In fairness one must add that the book is based on the Manfred Giehmann Collection, which is very good indeed, but of course imposes certain limits on what Carpenter could produce. In what it does do - which is formidable - this is a masterful volume, showcasing nearly 600 objects in full colour photographs of fine quality, and - something all too rare in many books on ethnic jewellery - discussing both the cultures which have produced the jewels shown and the objects themselves in truly informative, scholarly fashion. There is no doubt that Carpenter is one of the world's leading authorities on the subject of ethnic jewellery in Indonesia, and he has produced a book which, while very learned, can serve as something one may wish to read all the way through for pleasure, or use as something to "dip into", or as an excellent reference work. My wife Truus Daalder (author of the acclaimed book *Ethnic Jewellery and Adornment*) and I (Joost, her husband and fellow collector) have bought the book primarily for reference purposes, and have already learned a great deal from it. We would recommend that people also purchase, as a great addition, Anne Richter and Bruce Carpenter's *Gold Jewellery of the Indonesian Archipelago*, which is a superb volume (see my review of that). Both books are very attractively priced, and great value. As well, further good material is to be found in the somewhat older but still useful *Power and Gold: Jewellery from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines*, by Susan Rodgers.
