Something old, something new

I have been a great fan of Tamora Pierce over the last ten years or so. Her worlds are rich and vibrant, her characters fun and human. The novels themselves tend to flow rapidly and evenly, making them very good reads.

This is the first audio-book of hers I have 'read' - or listened to. I would have gone for the book, if it had been out, but having listened to it I am actually pleased she brought out the audio book first. It took a few minutes to get into it but her characteristic humour, very dry, and interactions between characters soon came out. The book itself is from the point of view of Evvy, and the actress who plays her voice is very good. Just the right amount of emotion into the speech.

The story is typical Tamora. While it might be slightly predictable, and the plot not overly complex, it is an exciting 'read' with a lot of humour. Somehow Tamora introduces moral character development without being preachy, so you can empathise with the main character without being put off.

Of course for a true fan the book explains Luvo, and hints far more about what happeneded to briar, Rosethorn and Evvy on their trip. The relationship to the unpublished story, and to other books is well done although it may be lost to a new reader. The book is more aimed at existing fans, but there is still plenty for the new reader.

Great production, but the story dissapoints

As a fan of Tamora Pierce and Full Cast Audio, I was eagerly anticipating this audiobook. However, it fell far short of my expectations.

The plot was very predictable. An attentive listener could discern the problem and the way it would be solved very early in the book, and there were no twists or turns along the way. More dissapointing than that, however, was the lack of original characters. Tamora Pierce's novels are usually so enjoyable because her characters and distinctive and vibrant. However, the main character, Evvy, is a young mage who grew up on the streets and has trouble trusting people. These two character themes are ones that Pierce has explored more than once already. Of the other characters, the only one that really captures the imagination is Luvo, who is a living rock.

Worse yet, the entire novel left me with a niggling feeling that it was all an allegory about war and self-destructive violence. Many of the characters assumed a preaching tone at times, as if the listener should pay attention to these life lessons. I was looking for a wonderful story, not trite moralizing.

However, Full Cast Audio reads the story with gusto. The voices are wonderful, and the performance makes up somewhat for the lackluster writing.

I have just completed reading Ms. Pierce's latest. What a disappointment! I slogged through this tedious book; the characters had few redeeming qualities and the dialog was ugly and awkward! I have no idea how it was as an audio book but it did NOT work as a real book.

I am a diehard fan...I have read every book Ms. Pierce has written and this is the first book I didn't enjoy... there were a few I really loved. Wait for the paperback if you must read this.

Excellent Resource for Gifted

I saw this book in a flyer at a state gifted conference and decided to order it. A co-worker and I used portions of this book as a resource for a Curriculum Development course to train gifted teachers throughout our school district. This book is FANTASTIC for gifted educators in both elementary and secondary. Each chapter is an easy read and provides many real-life examples of how to implement these tools/strategies in today's gifted classroom. My favorite to learn about was Kaplan's Depth & Complexity. Our teachers gave us great verbal feedback about this book and I have to agree. Definitely a book that is relevant, relatable, and will get great use from me!

Good practical tips

This book is a quick read but contains nuggets of practical tips on visualizing and exercises in the manifesting process. He gives great tips about using all your senses to visualize and feel your desire, and also has tips about how to become open to receiving. He also emphasizes how important it is to actually spend time doing these exercises every day as opposed to just reading about them, the same way a body builder needs to spend some time every day doing exercises to accomplish his goal. I have read many books including The Secret, Joseph Murphy, Wayne Dyer, and this author did give some very good practical advice not mentioned in these other books.

I don't usually give 5 stars but this is one that truly deserves them. Why? The author kicks out all the fluff and gets straight to the point. The title actually hides the biggest message that is inside the book, that you can manifest anything you want, not just lottery winnings.

This is one of those books that really explains the techniques you REALLY need to get results.

If you have watched 'The Secret' and was left wondering, What now? Then this is the book to give you the answers to those unanswered questions. The film was a great plug for all the 'Law of Attraction' courses that followed. You don't need them.

This short book has the answers and my hat off to the author for making it crystal clear and easy to follow.

It may seem like a cliche, but things have been happening seen changing my attitude to a more positive and out going one. By simply doing what the book outlines you will get results and hopefully your dreams.

Give it a try. It would be a shame if when you die, your dreams die with you. What have you got to lose?

A fantastic look at metaphysical wisdom

This book is fantastic! Eddie writes a serious yet very readable and entertaining look at metaphysics, and how we can manifest our desires and goals. He mentions many of my favorite authors, including Neville Goddard and Dr. Joseph Murphy, emphasizing the very best of their beliefs. Eddie also explains the importance of visualization and vibrational energy. I love this book because of it's warmth and authenticity. Here are a few words of wisdom shared by Eddie:
"A change in consciousness results in a change in physical conditions. We have at our command the most powerful tool known to mankind---our mind. The power within our minds can heal us, prosper us, attract ideal circumstances.....the power of your thoughts is creative energy in its finest and most dynamic form"

Finally - A Book That Lays It All Out Honestly

I have read many books on this subject and finally found one that actually gives the entire picture in detail - a one-stop resource that is easy to read, use, and follow. Author Young breaks down each aging issue (from crow's feet to frown lines) and then gives all the options available to address them: from homeopathy, cosmetics, inexpensive drug store products, high end beauty products, laser treatments, to plastic surgery. And yes, the author is a plastic surgeon but that is actually not the emphasis here nor is it even encouraged. Rather, these are fixes to prevent people from going under the knife when there are so many other options available.

The book breaks down as follows: Youth and beauty; Myths about beauty; Skin care; and plastic surgery; Your skin, your age, your beauty; The age-fix routine; The age fix diet; Improving your portrait; Eye repair; Reshaping your curves; Other youth and beauty issues; Aging gracefully, Appendix 1 Product sources; Appendix 2 if you need a plastic surgeon; references, index.

The introduction briefly goes over skin and how it ages. This is important to understand in relation to how the products or services work on the skin that are suggested later. Included is a very informative Q&A of the most common questions asked (e.g., "Can I change the size of my pores? If collagen is the problem, should I try collagen cream?").

The next section addresses age issues that people wish to fix. It's thorough but never drones endlessly; the book is brief and precise.

A large section is devoted to makeup and cosmetics as well as natural scrubs and creams. Often, these are even better than surgery at mitigating trouble areas. I've waited a long time for a book with actual answers that included product names which we can go out and buy immediately - with a nice list of reasons where one would be better than the other (or one is a complete waste of money). As a facial plastic surgeon, I highly recommend this book! Must read for those who want to look and feel their best in today's visual society. Dr. Youn has put a lot of work and insight into easy to read resource. Can you find all of this info on the internet? Not as focussed and well presented as you will find here. Dr. Youn moves you past the clutter and misinformation on the internet, making this a valuable resource for even doctors, like myself, to read. We aren't getting any younger, and every bit helps. This is a fantastic book! There is so much useful information and great beauty tips. I can't wait to try some of the at home remedies. Dr. Youn really goes over everything you could ever ask a plastic surgeon. Being a middle aged woman and just starting to think about different creams and products to try I couldn't have asked for a better guide. He really tells you which products work and are worth the money and which ones are a waste. I also am starting to think about fillers and Botox and appreciate the information on those. I feel like I can go into a consult with the education needed to make a decision on what's best for me. Also, when the time comes that I am in the market for plastic surgery I will be referencing this book to guide me through the process. I would definitely recommend this book to all women. We are all getting older and this will definitely help to try to prevent us from looking it.

As he points out, “momentous changes often occur when a foreign literature satisfies a sore need of an indigenous literature, thus developing a strong affinity...” And translation can fulfill a crucial role in bringing about affinity between literatures and peoples. According to Professor Wang, “Nothing is more crucial in cultural contacts, not to say cultural interactions, than translation, particularly in a country that for long periods closed its doors to the outside world, like China.”
