Euripides' plays invert, subvert, and pervert traditional assertions of order; they challenge their audience's most basic tenets and assumptions about the moral, social, and civic fabric of mankind and replace them with a new vision based on clearly articulated values of his own.One who seeks for "meaning" in this tragedy will come closest to finding it by examining everything in the play (characters, their actions, choruses, mythic plots and allusions to myth, place within literary traditions and use of conventions) in close conjunction with a feasible reconstruction of the audience's expectations in each regard, for we see that it is a keynote of Euripides' dramaturgy to fail to fulfill these expectations. This study proceeds from the premise that Medea's murder of her children is the key to the play. We see that the introduction of this murder into the Medea-saga was Euripides' own innovation. We see that the play's themes include the classic opposition of Man and Woman. Finally, we see that in Greek culture the social order is maintained by strict adherence within the family to the rule that parents and children reciprocally nurture one another in their respective ages of helplessness. Through the heroine's repeated assaults on this fundamental and sacred value, the playwright most persuasively portrays her

About the Author

Richard Gargiulo is a professor of special education in the School of Education at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. He received his Master's degree and PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In 1999, he was awarded the University's President's Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has also served as a Fulbright Scholar to the Czech Republic and has authored numerous books on the subjects of special education, early childhood education, and child abuse and neglect. He has been president of the Council for Exceptional Children and president of the Division on Autism and Development Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children.

Do not use electronic version as a class text book

The information in the book is presented well, clear, easy to understand. The book itself is good. My low review comes from the format. I bought the kindle version as a textbook for class, and for that purpose it is almost useless. There is no linked table of content, not page numbers, only the basic location feature. It works fine as a reference but is almost useless in class because it's almost impossible to find a specific location in the book. If your professor gives you an assignment to read pages 101-150, for example, you will need to find a print copy, see what is in the page, then scroll through the kindle book to find that location. Fix this and you'll have a great e-text book.

This book is a must-have for ANY teacher or prospective teacher. I am an English Education major but I am also a music teacher, and this book has provided me with wonderful insight for some of my students.

The key terms are bolded and off to one side, which is a bonus for any college student. The summaries at the end of each chapter are comprehensive and adequate. Not only that, but the book is extremely easy to read even if you don't understand things like Public Laws or state curriculum. It also provides additional resources for every single chapter.

Overall, well written, interesting and insightful. The price on Amazon is also very fair, you can't buy this cheaper anywhere else.

I recommend for Special Ed majors and Teachers of any grade level

I was told I would not receive this book until February or March but I got it just a couple days ago. I love this book and I cannot wait to use it to continue my teaching experience. I highly recommended buying this book if you're special ed/early childhood major like myself, or if your a teacher that has an inclusion classroom. This book will help you to understand the different types of disabilities and how/what to do in general situations.

In addition to being a doctor, Steve is a pro-tour caddie and runs coaching workshops that guarantee to reduce people's handicaps. It's applicable to any sport, and indeed, Steve argues, to life itself.What prompted you to write your first book about golf?Curiously I'm a keen golfer, but far less obsessed with golf than many people would expect. I am far more consumed by the awesome power of our mind, and how we can use it to unleash our hidden potential in all areas of our lives. Golf was the ideal entry point, because it is the one of the few sports where the mind is at least as important as technical ability, especially at the highest level.Why the connection with 'Magic' in the title 'Play Magic Golf'?I have a child-like fascination with magic in all its forms. We can learn how to perform card tricks, but we will never understand the magic that surrounds us in the natural world. How does a spider know how to construct its intricate web? How does a salmon swim thousands of miles to return to its birthplace? How do some people survive the most appalling illnesses and adversities? This is the essence of magic, and there is a lot of magic in golf too.Who is your favourite golfer?I have several, all for different reasons. Despite his recent problems Tiger Woods has taken the game to a new level, and attracted millions of new fans to a sport that has been seen as elitist, and frankly boring. I like Rory McIlroy because of his youthful innocence and massive raw talent. My favourite is Caroline. She was my first client, and her 3 holes-in-one in quick succession grabbed people's attention. She didn't follow all my advice, but then wives rarely do.Your love of golf comes out in the book, how long have you played golf?I first started at the age of 14, but it was a lot more expensive then to get started than it is now. I also spent most of my life working in developing countries, so there were few opportunities to play. Now I spend most of my time in England, have more opportunities, but a lot less time than I imagined.Who will enjoy the book the most, the gals or the guys?I hope my book will resonate with people from all segments of society, and of all ages. As far as I can tell it does. I enjoy the notes from many men and women who write to me about their golfing stories. I also know some of our top teenagers like the book too. They are mad keen about their golf, though I think they prefer the audiobook version.How long have you been writing?If you include writing boring business reports and research papers then I've been writing all my working life. I've only been writing stuff I enjoy for four years. I started with a 30-minute audiobook which became an instant international best-seller. Previously I would never have believed I had a book in me. I learnt the priceless lesson that if you can write a paragraph you can write a page, then a chapter, and before you know it you have something that resembles a book .I should have worked this out a lot sooner, but better late than never.Any plans for future books?When I finished writing 'Play Magic Golf' my only plan was never to write another book. Curiously I soon realised that writing had insidiously become an important part of my life, and now I can't imagine a life without it. So there are lots of plans. Certainly the next book will be written for a wider audience. There are so many ways we can all enrich our lives by more effectively harnessing our brain power. Often the most important step is ditching the self-limiting beliefs we learnt at school, and in later life.

About the Author
I have lived in war-torn Angola, the swamps of Nigeria, the steppes of Kazakhstan and the deserts of Oman. As an international Medical and HR Director I was privileged to work with many world leaders, including Bill Clinton, and was a task force member of the World Economic Forum, and Global Business Coalition.
Less pleasantly I was mugged, imprisoned, shot at, mortared, almost killed in a helicopter incident, experienced near-fatal malaria, the less serious dengue, dysentery, and the dubious delights of Tumbu infection. I also enjoyed fighting against esoteric tropical diseases, such as Marburg. This is a variety of Ebola, and just about the deadliest disease on the planet. I was part of the team that responded to the World's largest ever outbreak of Marburg, in Angola.

Although we had hugely different backgrounds we shared many of the same interests (including beer) and even though my left brain and his right took us on widely divergent paths professionally and geographically, we have remained brothers over all these years. We both have a rather annoying (to others) habit that any social occasion on which we meet very quickly becomes a philosophical exploration of how and why we and others we know well have taken the trajectories through life that have led us to where we are, what we have learned along the way, and where we may be headed in the future.

I am almost totally indifferent to golf. Steve is not, but he asked me to read his book because it touches on some of the areas we have debated and discussed for many years. He may not agree, but "Play Magic Golf" is not about golf at all, any more than "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" was a Harley Davidson manual.

Much of what Steve writes about is common sense, but that kind of common sense which sits elusively just out of reach for most people until it is pointed out, and then they can only marvel at how they hadn't seen it before. Much is analytical in a very left brain way (sorry, Steve!) reminiscent of the classical stoic philosophy schools. Some is speculative, some wildly speculative, but in a very challenging and thought-provoking way.

Who would benefit from reading this fairly short book? Certainly golfers would, and probably other sportsmen, but as I said, it isn't a book about golf or even sport and it would be a pity if the readership was limited to sportsmen. It is a book about the intricate and fascinating way that the human mind is the warp to the weft of our everyday lives and achievements and relationships, and it is as relevant to physicians and plumbers, too. It is a celebration of choosing rather than simply reacting, and a handbook of exercises for strengthening the virtual muscles needed to direct the mind in positive directions instead of simply being an observer as it bounces randomly off the walls. Discussion of these concepts can all too easily descend into turgidity or sanctimony, but Dr Simpson avoids those traps to produce an enjoyable and often thought-provoking book.

Easy to follow and helps with day to day hassle's.

Easy to follow book that will be a perfect gift for all my friends and family that play golf and other stress inducing sports, but I can see how it will help people with stressful jobs too - I found several of the methods useful for my day to day hassles with my newborn. Entertaining and enjoyable to read too.

Very disappointing.

Have you noticed not one five star review? Don't waste your money on this book. It is more like a long newspaper story on positive self talk, self hypnosis, mindfullness, and other psychological motivators without any instruction on how to use them. The author rambles from subject to subject and even admits he has attention deficit disorder. Where was his Editor?

The book's jacket is really misleading because there is little detail and weak research. I was very disappointed.

About the Author

Jim Arlow has been programming and designing object-oriented software systems since 1990. He has created object models for blue chip companies such as British Airways and M&G. He is a respected OO consultant in Europe and has written and delivered many training courses on object technology and Java. Jim is a regular speaker at conferences such as Object World, and has been an invited speaker at University College London, City University, and the British Computer Society.

Ila Neustadt has worked in IT for British Airways for more than twenty years and has experience of all parts within the IT development life cycle. She worked in the strategy department modeling the architecture process and developing architecture training, and acted as program head for the graduate business analyst program. Ila now coordinates skills development for BA s IT staff.

About this book

The aim of this book is to take you through the process of object-oriented (OO) analysis and design using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and the Unified Process (UP).

UML provides the visual modeling language for OO modeling, and UP provides the software engineering process framework that tells you how to perform OO analysis and design.

There is a lot to UP, and in this book we present only those aspects directly pertinent to the work of the OO analyst/designer. For details on the other aspects of UP, you should refer to Rumbaugh 1 and the other UP books in the bibliography.

In this book we show you enough UML and associated analysis and design techniques so that you can apply modeling effectively on a real project. According to Stephen J Mellor Mellor 1, there are three approaches to UML modeling.

• UML as a sketch - this is an informal approach to UML where diagrams are sketched out to help visualize a software system. It's a bit like sketching an idea for something on the back of a napkin. The sketches have little value beyond their initial use, are not maintained, and are finally discarded. You typically use whiteboards or drawing tools such as Visio and PowerPoint (www.microsoft.com) to create the informal sketches.

• UML as a blueprint - this is a more formal and precise approach whereby UML is used to specify a software system in detail. This is like a set of architect's plans or a blueprint for a machine. The UML model is actively maintained and becomes an important deliverable of the project. This approach demands the use of a real modeling tool such as Rational Rose (www.rational.com) or MagicDraw UML (www.magicdraw.com).

• UML as executable - using Model Driven Architecture (MDA), UML models may be used as a programming language. You add enough detail to UML models so that the system can be compiled from the model. This is the most formal and precise use of UML, and, in our view, it is the future of software development. In this approach, you need an MDA-enabled UML tool such as ArcStyler (www.arcstyler.com). MDA is beyond the scope of this book, although we discuss it briefly in Section 1.4.

Our focus in this book is on UML as a blueprint. The techniques you learn will also apply to using UML as an executable. Having learned UML as a blueprint, you will naturally be able to use UML as a sketch should you need to. We have tried to make our presentation of UML and UP as straightforward and accessible as possible.

Conventions

To help you navigate through the book we have provided each chapter with a roadmap in the form of a UML activity diagram. These diagrams indicate reading activities and the order in which sections might be read. We cover activity diagrams in detail in Chapter 14, but Figure 1 should be sufficient to let you understand the roadmaps.

Most of the diagrams in this book are UML diagrams. The annotations, in blue, are not part of UML syntax.

We have provided notes in the margin to highlight important information. We have used the UML note icon for this.

a natural union of UML, UP and OO design

UML has grown. A few years ago, when UML was just getting accepted, a book on how to use it would have been much thinner. But the successful broad uptake of UML led to its semantic notation being expanded. What the authors give us here is a thorough exposition of UML 2.0 and how to use it.

As you might expect, there are numerous examples in UML. Which, to many readers, might be more understandable than a mere abstract diagram. But the book is more than just about explaining the UML semantics. It also goes into the Unified Process for running a project, and how this can be documented in UML. By doing so, the authors hope to better enable an understanding of both.

There is also something else, related to the above, but sufficiently different and important to warrant notice. If you write in any object oriented language, it requires certain skills in designing classes and how they interact. Part 4 of the book concerns these issues, which it discusses under the rubric of "Design". A good explanation of the basic concepts. Like inheritance versus aggregation, or inheritance versus interfaces. Or why the lack of multiple inheritance in a language like C# or Java is not necessarily a deficiency.
