Although the story is pointedly didactic, it is handled with a light touch, and the well-rendered pictures carry off the farce. As good-humored social commentary, this may not convert TV addicts into born-again readers, but it should provoke chuckles among the target audience and their parents. Many in the audience will find themselves nodding in recognition. Ages 8-10.

A powerful book about the influence television has on kids

I just heard this story read aloud at a teacher's workshop and was dismayed to hear it is no longer in print. The story powerfully shows readers how TV negatively affects children's creativity and "vision". A great story for parents and teachers to share with each other and with their children. The illustrations are colorful and humorous and will appeal to readers of every age. This book has a message which has never been needed to be heard more than today. If you are concerned about the negative affects of television viewing on children this book's for you. Share it with all you know!! A gem!!

Also teaches about shapes and a great master artist

My students love this book about the negative effects of watching too much television. I read it when I am teaching about shapes and right angles, as well as when I teach about the art of Piet Mondrian.

Wonderful book

A wonderful book to read to children before school ends for the summer. It is about a boy that watches so much TV that his eyes become squares. The book shows how the little boy sees things with his square eyes too. The book is a little dated but the story is still fun and the children learned the important part of the book. Don't watch to much TV. When I read it to my students they thought that it was a lot like the game Mind craft. (because of all the squares)

Dr. Westman teaches this diet to a class at Duke University and the video linked above is of an introductory class where he explains the diet. I guess so many people asked for the info in the class handouts that Dr Westman put this document on Amazon.

After successfully losing weight a few years ago on the Dukan diet (high protein, low fat, low carb), I found that as I got older, it didn't work for me and wasn't sustainable. I still eventually had cravings and got tired of eating so much protein.
I researched this Low Carb - High Fat - Moderate Protein (Keto) diet and now my husband and I have lost weight (so far -me 10lbs, him 14lbs) - however, the weight loss has really become just a wonderful side effect of this "lifestyle".
We are only in week 5, but we are experiencing reduced hunger, quicker satiety, better focus, concentration and attention span, increased energy level all day (evenly), better memory, restful sleep, less skin problems for me, more overall strength/endurance and a feeling of overall increased sense of well-being. We are in our 50's, and both work full time. This has honestly felt like a fog has been lifted.

Here's how it works: When you eat carbs (sugar/starches) it raises the glucose (sugar) levels in your blood. When that happens, your liver responds by making insulin. Insulin signals the brain, telling it to store all fat. The more carbs you eat for fuel, the more carbs you crave. (Think of it as burning newspaper (carbs) in a fireplace for heat vs. burning wood (fat) Fat burns evenly and burns longer, without having to constantly refuel). The more you eat carbs, the more you trigger insulin production - the enemy of weight loss.
BUT when you deprive your body of carbs (less than 20g/day) your body will choose to burn fat as fuel instead. This stage is called ketosis (because it triggers the liver to produce ketones) and happens in about 3 days time on average. Once you put your body into ketosis, when you eat fat, it sends a signal to the brain that you are full and satisfied. You will not be hungry all the time and you will know when you are full. Your body will tell you and it will not let you overeat. Now your body will BURN all the fat that you eat - and will not store it. And - BONUS - when you are not eating, your body will happily burn the fat you have stored on your body - like your belly, hips or butt.
IT IS NOT A FAD - It's science. This diet is over 20 years old, originally created to treat epilepsy, it is also used to treat/reverse some types of diabetes. This is the perfect diet for those who have had trouble losing weight due to insulin-resistance.

It's SO important to have an open mind about this diet because everything we were taught, is wrong. Fat is not the bad guy - sugar is. This diet can/will lower your cholesterol. Do some research on this before trying it and see all the info and data out there. More and more doctors are standing up, coming out and acknowledging that what they were taught was wrong. Low fat diets don't work for many people. If your doctor isn't on board, find a doctor who is.

From my experience, I say this: This diet feels right. It feels like we were meant to eat this way. I used to be always hungry, always thinking about my next meal. I overate, never really registering that I was full. I was often tired, sore and stiff. Couldn't stand for long periods without shifting my weight from one foot to the other or leaning on something. My posture was bad, my attention span was short, and woke in the morning feeling like I needed more sleep. Now I find myself really shocked at how many problems sugar can cause with your body and your health.

I suggest that you search the web and do research yourself. but don't discount this lifestyle until you do. It may be labeled a diet but this is a way to let your body self-regulate itself and heal itself by giving it the fuel to do so. And once it does - all you have to do is eat the high fat/low carb/moderate protein food that you love: bacon, eggs, sausage, ribeyes, caesar salad, ribs, buffalo wings with bleu cheese dressing... We no longer crave carbs!

Need to take time to read it. Very small book, arrived very quickly. Apparently this diet is taken from a dietary approach to dealing with seizures that predates much of modern medicine. Read about it in Wikipedia. Whatever; it is a low-everything diet that I intend to use along with a generally "South Beach Phase 3" approach to control and reduce my body weight gradually and permanently. Lifestyle modification needs all the valid information possible and some variety if that can be managed, IMHO.

This should have been advertised as a " brochure" pamphlet or handout, certainly not as a book. It was only a few pages in length and he price was excessive. I was so disappointed, that I just put it aside and maybe later I will read it. .

This book has changed my life!

I'm 68 years old, forgetting everything, obese and out of shape. I've lost and gained weight so many times I could have made three different people. I didn't feel like doing anything, much less exercise. My nails were non-existent, my hair limp and thinning.

UNTIL I read this book! In three weeks of following this new way of living (it is NOT just a diet!) I've lost 12 lbs, have happily started an exercise program, and have more energy than I've had in years! I'm never hungry, I get to eat all kinds of meats and cheeses and veggies, and I don't even bother counting calories. The supplements he recommends have made an almost instant difference - my nails are stronger and growing long, my skin is better, and my overall mood is vastly improved. This will be my way of life from here on out, and I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It was like taking blinders off, and being able to see again. Thank you, Dr Perlmutter, for this wonderful book, and for the back up help from your website!

This book is absolutely amazing. It is chock full of great information for the dieter who is looking to increase his knowledge on how exactly grains and different types of carbs can affect your brain.

I really enjoyed the writer's style, it helped keep me engaged and interested in the content, unlike other books on the same subject. The most interesting part is that I was able to lose a significant amount of weight just by following some of the guidelines in the book. I also took a supplement called Garcinia Cambogia that has only accelerated my weight loss.

I have a child with ADHD so I really enjoyed the fact that ADHD and different types of gluten sensitivity were covered in grain brain. Since I have previously been on the primal diet, I knew some of the information since the two diets were similar, but not exactly the same. Prior to reading it I believed that gluten free and grain free were exactly the same which is not always the case.

I recommend that anyone read this book, it's a quick read and contains a ton of great information that can be extremely helpful. I was lucky to get this book as a gift from my lovely brother in law (Marcus) and really owe him one for this great read.

Everyone should read this book! Really!

I have long been plagued by many of the health issues that Dr. Perlmutter addresses in `Grain Brain', and have been seeking answers, including reading many `health diet' books. I even attended an all-vegetarian cooking school in order to learn more about how to better my health after having cancer. In short, THIS IS THE BOOK with the information that I have been searching for so many years for. Dr. Perlmutter is unique among doctors, because he is a board-certified Neurologist, a fellow of the American College of Nutrition (the only doctor in the country who is both), and a fellow of the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine. His book is based on his very real patients at his own practice, and he cites huge amounts of research and studies to back up his claims. Most of us realize that American has become a very sick nation, with little being done in the way of preventative medicine, because doctors are taught to diagnose disease and prescribe a treatment. They are not trained in nutrition, and most base their advice (if any) about nutrition on misguided dietary principles. One cartoon says it very well "The high-carb diet I put you on 20 years ago gave you diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease (and brain disease). Oops"

The other reviews tell you what this book is about, how you should eliminate gluten and most carbs, and most fruits and sugar, get regular exercise, and sleep well, in order to have a healthy brain (and body). The writing style is very easy for anyone to understand the concepts and principles behind the plan. There are recipes and of course lists of foods to help get you going on the plan. I literally could not put this book down once I started it. I have started the plan, and am extremely excited about it. I would love to give the book to everyone I know, and everyone I meet!

A good read!

I actually bought this as it's prescribed for my university curriculum but even if I read it otherwise, I would say that it is quite well written and offers good explanation for the subject matter. This book lacks a few more concepts but that's okay as the title clearly states that its's an "introduction". So if you are looking for a book to learn sociology basics, read this one. Great work by Sachdeva and Vidya Bhushan!

I used the book to supplement a summer class. The review questions, case studies and appendices were great for understanding the information in each chapter.

pretty good, but some serious errors

This book is pretty good. The authors were renowned in their field. BUT...it is not that well written. Many of the explanations are too vague for a beginner. Example, the difference between Informed Consent and Expressed Consent - they do not make any effort to differentiate.
Also, it was BADLY EDITED, and has a number of errors, as does the workbook, and testbank. Some of the answers to test questions are wrong, and most are written poorly. Sometimes it will tell you 2 different answers to the same question in 2 different parts of the book. Also, the Order of Draw is very outdated, since well before the latest edition updates.
Most of the info is good, but unless you are taking a course from a great instructor who has spent a lot of time in the field, just get something else. My extremely distinguished teacher suggests "Phlebotomy Handbook: Blood Specimen Collection from Basic to Advanced (8th Edition) by Diana Garza and Kathleen Becan-McBride" (Paperback - Mar. 6, 2009)

Great resource for beginners and professionals!

As a classically trained music professor who dabbles in music technology, this has been a terrific book to prepare me to introduce Ableton and a new way of thinking about composition to my students. I am currently working my way through the book and have never used Ableton Live before. It's been very easy to jump right into the projects and produce music. The supplemental downloads are great and easy to use. I've had the pleasure of attending workshops by Will, and now I more fully understand how to use the software and see the possibilities in creating my own course materials. This book is fantastic for anyone looking to use Ableton to create a variety of styles of music. The book covers ambient, hip-hop, modern house, chiptune, dubstep, drum and bass, pop/rock, and more. Check it out!

Great book for learning to work smarter

a lot of stuff that would even be useful if you don't use Ableton, but if you do, this book is a must. Some basic how to info in the beginning, but it's more about creating a workflow and set up that compliment each other. Very well written and a a large number of downloadable material to compliment the book. If you're someone who learns best by doing, this is for you, from the start you're given tasks that expose you to actually using all the things he talks about. Can't recommend this highly enough.

The Ableton book I've been waiting for.

As a music production instructor, I was SOOOOO HAPPY to see this book. It is the most fabulous Ableton book I have seen yet. Unlike the other Ableton books I've used, this book teaches new skills through performance and composition. I'm so excited to use this as the new textbook for my music production classes.
