Don't be a clueless traveler!

As I mentioned in my Venice review I found the Rome guide enormously helpful on a recent trip. Had to also add Venice and Paris so I can start mentally preparing for my next trips.... These books are really fun...the photos are great and the tips are terrific. These authors are your personal guides who really know their stuff!

The Clued in Paris Guide was so helpful to my brother and sister-in-law. They spent 2weeks in Paris and found the advise super helpful. I love the organization and links in the book. I wish I had this book when I traveled to Paris. Another trip is in order. I can't wait to read the next books in the series.

Although Kyne's tale of business smarts has been around for some time (it was first published by William Randolph Hearst in 1921), it doesn't feel dated. Indeed, lumber wholesaler Cappy Ricks's situation (he "had more troubles than a hen with ducklings") mirrors that of many business leaders today. It's a straightforward parable about a young war veteran who's handed an opportunity that will either make or break his career. If he accepts the job and pulls it off, he's a go-getter; if he fails, it's curtains. The kid's motto-"It shall be done"-sums up Kyne's point: even if you're unsure, say you can do it. Then figure out how to do it and make sure you succeed. Go above and beyond. The 82-year-old story gets some slight spiffing up by business book writer Axelrod (Everything I Know About Business I Learned from Monopoly), and the afterword is especially helpful in pinpointing Kyne's main ideas.

A native of San Francisco, Peter B. Kyne was a prolific screenwriter and the author of the 1920 bestseller "Kindred of the Dust". His stories of Cappy Ricks and the Rick's Logging & Lumbering Company were serialized in "The Saturday Evening ""Post" and William Randolph Hearst's "Cosmopolitan" magazine. He died in 1957.

Game changer

I read this book because I've heard good things about it in a finance podcast. When I began reading it, I'll be honest, it was kind of unfriendly to me because I'm not a native English speaker, and many of the words they use in the conversations between characters use a lot of old local words.

That kept on along the whole book, but despide that, the message that this text conveys is a ver powerful one. There are a few books which I can say that are able to change the way you think about things and the way you DO things, and this is one of them. I've assumed the attitude described in this book and believe me, it changes everything.

It's kind of short too, so don't miss out on it.

Reading to ponder by

Peter Bernard Kyne has written an awe-inspiring story that he dedicated to his Chief, Brigadier-General Leroy S. Lyon, Commander of the 65th Field Artillery Brigade, 40th Division, United States Army, which most likely influenced the story behind The Go-Getter: A Story That Tells You How to be One. Although the title sounds like a sales pitch, and possibly that may have been Kyne's intention, of selling one's self in any scenario, he tells convincing story that shows the power of first impressions.

In order to understand this scenario, the story revolves around Alden P. Ricks, also known as Cappy Ricks and his lumber and logging company and his encounter with a go-getter that he described as anyone under 30 years old. And during the first few pages of the short story, the only man that he thought fit that trait was his son-in-law who he was seeking to fill a position at the company's Shanghai office. But little did he know that World War I veteran William E. Peck, a soldier who had list of unlikely circumstances after his service during the war, lost a part of his left arm, suffered a broken leg that was shorter than it should be, had a bout with pneumonia and influenza, and tuberculosis, would appear at his general office. And as he observed, illness did not stop Peck from pursuing his goal to land a job with Ricks's company. However, Rick and President of the company Mr. Skinner had something in mind to determine Peck's capability to prove his worthiness to the company. And as one reads Kyne's clever storyline, there is no denying how this narrative could have easily been included within the pages of a Dale Carnegie book.

The title of the book indeed already gives the reader an idea what they may expect the storyline may be about. But that should not discourage anyone from delving into the pages of this very short story that tells an interesting perspective of how one man's persistence, logic, and common sense helped to influence his goal.

Quick read to describe what I look for when i hire a new employee.

There is a man in my town who owns 14 Pizza Huts. I found out he made his managers read this book before he hired them. I figured if it's good enough for him, it would be good enough for me.

It is a fast read, entertaining but also gets across the point very well about self-starting.

I recommend it to bosses, parents and those who want to self-start everywhere.

Can't Judge Book by Title

I got past the first two words of the title (Frugal Yachting)only to be faced with the third word (family). Maybe the rest of the title is what they should have called it: Adventuring in Small Sailboats. I usually avoid things labelled "family", since single folks like me are not welcome in such places, as much as I like kids. But I put all this aside, and with the help of reviews, I thought that this book might be a help to me. I was right. This book is a labor of love by an experienced sailor who shows you most of the boats that would match your interests, spinning yarns, anecdotes, and sailing tricks while he's at it. This book is a treasure. Buy it!

A must have for the small boat sailor

Frugal Yachting captures the essence of the small boat sailor. A truly remarkable book that should be read cover to cover for first time boat buyers and dreamers alike.
Larry Brown has a way of presenting the average sailor's viewpoint. It's more important what you're doing, than what you're doing it in, sailors aren't necessarily rich, and the amount a boat is sailed is inversely proportional to its size.
Included are lots of tips and tricks for cruising in style for minimal cost and in minimal space.
An excellent tribute to all who love sailing, and could care less about Tarzan yells.
Anytime we feel intimidated by big expensive boats in a marina, I just read a few chapters and remember, "Yeah but I'm having as much fun as you (or more), doing effectively the same thing, and am not frightened to leave the dock for fear of a scratch.
Frugal Yachting will always remain a cherished addition to our on-board library.

This book should really be called "Why small boats are more fun!" Brown sagely observes that (1) most sailboats are daysailed, which means most of the sailor's time is spent in the cockpit; (2) a trailerable boat costs a lot less over the years than a boat in a slip, and (3) the simpler a boat is to rig and miantain, the more time you spend actually sailing.

Any sailor is familiar with the typical marina scene: Big boats tied up at the dock, being used as a floating picnic table, as the owner doesn't have the motivation or the crew to actually take her out for a real sail. Or the boat that's motored out of the harbor, parked a mile off shore for use as a swimming and drinking patform, and then motored back in. Or the boat that can only bve sailed from one expensive blue water marina to another becuse of its deep draft.

Brown likes small, shallow-draft boats that can be hauled up on a beach, or at a minimum, anchored near enough for the crew to wade in. He likes gunkholing- lazily exploring little inlets and estuaries where the big boats can't go. And most of all he likes the West Wight Potter, a 14' mini-cruiser that he and his young family sailed for many years. Brown has probably done more for that boat than all the advertising the company has done over the years.

Now there are plenty of people who can buy a 31' boat and afford the slip fees without a second thought, and who don't mind paying someone else to do the maintenance. But there are a lot more people who'd like to sail, but who can't afford paying as much for a boat as they did for the last two family cars. If you're at all interested in sailing, but think you need a big boat with 4 berths, a head, and a galley to enjoy time on the water, read this book; it'll be a revelation.

Electric Motor Repair, 2nd Edition review

This book is old school, but it has great diagrams, schematics and well written explanation of electrical principles, which don't change. The main reason I bought it is that it also has a section for motor control, which works well for wiring up panel boards to control motors.

Bought this as a present for someone and he was over the moon when i gave it to him i heard him going on and on about how much he'd like it for learning about motor rewinding and such.
So i have to say a big thanks to the author of this book you made a old man smile like a kid :)
