About the Author
Deputy Assistant Chief John Norman is a veteran of more than 40 years in the fire service, with a wide range of experience. He has fought fires in rural, suburban, and urban settings. Now retired, Norman was Chief of Special Operations with the New York Fire Department from 2001 to 2007. Until that date, as a Battalion Chief, he had been assigned to the 16th Battalion in Harlem. In the days after the collapse of the Twin Towers, Norman was designated as the Search and Rescue manager for the World Trade Center site. He operated in that position as a member of the Incident Commanders General Staff for two months before assuming his assignment as the Chief in Charge of the Special Operations Command on a full-time basis. Chief Norman is also the author of Fire Department Special Operations.

Text book is great....study guide is HORRIBLE

While the actual text book is one of the best resources for anyone in or learning about the fire service, the study guide is HORRIFIC. There is no way that the author of the text, John Norman, also formulated the questions in the study guide...if he did, he had better just stick with writing text books. There are numerous questions in the study guide that flat out give the wrong answer or wrong page number to find the correct answer. I could look past that, as no one is perfect (even though you would think prior to publishing it would be reviewed several times), however the questions in general are misleading and clearly written to trip you up. The questions are mentally draining as you have to read each scenario question several times just to determine what they are looking for. The goal of this study guide is clearly not to ensure you have a knowledge of the text and information, rather its design will frustrate you to no end. I am using this study guide for a promotional test, and quite frankly, it has been more detrimental than useful. While I feel I have a good grasp of the principles and information in the text, I find myself having to memorize ridiculous questions from the study guide in case they are on the written promotional test word for word. Not what a study guide should be designed to do...shame on those responsible for publishing such a horrible addition to a great text book.

A tool but don't rely on it

The study guide seems to be from a previous edition as some of the wording in the questions is similar but not exacty what is in the 4th efition. The page references are not always correct either. The questions are thought provoking and cause you to want to look up the correct answers but the way some of the answers are written I doubt that it was career firefighter wiring them.

Difficult to use...good for getting deeper in the textbook.

I agree with one of the other reviewers about the study guide being difficult to use. Many of the answers are wrong in the answer key. Many, many of the questions and answer choices are written badly. The only helpfullness I found in it was it made me look deep in the actual textbook for the answers and in doing so, could commit the details to memory. But, it is frustrating and a little exhausting picking through the question and answer choice wording. Also, it becomes tiresome looking up an answer to a question to make sure you answered it correctly because the answer key is wrong...
All that being said, I am glad I used it because it forced me to get more familiar with the textbook information.

About the Author
Lawton R. Burns is the James Joo-Jin Kim Professor and professor of Health Care Systems and Management in the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also director of the Wharton Center for Health Management and Economics and visiting professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. Dr. Burns has published extensively on the health care system for the past twenty years.

How to Create Win-Win-Win Partnerships in Health Care

Burns and several of his Wharton School colleagues collaborated on this book as well as a subsequently published book, The Business of Healthcare Innovation, which I also highly recommend. In the later work's Introduction when explaining the value chain perspective, Burns observes that it "analyzes the entire sequence from raw materials (input) market to final customer (output) market. The sequence is labeled a `value chain' because each link in the chain adds value to its inputs. Each link seeks to maximize its contributions to the total product's value added, thereby capturing as much profit as it can. This may involve focusing on only those links which add the greatest value (and let other firms focus on links that add less value), or encompassing as many links as possible in order to maximize the total profit captured (and leave as little as possible for other firms to divide up)."

This is a key point because whatever decision is made, there can be -- and almost always are -- significant consequences insofar as gross volume, net income, and market share are concerned. In this earlier published volume, Burns and his Wharton School collaborators focus on a large segment of the health care industry which, until now, has not received the attention it deserves. They rigorously examine "the trading relationships between [and among] the producers (manufacturers) of health care products, the purchasers of these products (group purchasing organizations, wholesalers/distributors), and the health care providers (hospital customers) that are the end users of those products -- hence the title of this book."

This is by no means an "easy read" but, as does The Business of Healthcare Innovation, it generously rewards those who absorb and digest the material, then carefully consider appropriate ways by which to apply what they have learned. Obviously, the relevance of the material will ultimately be determined by its practical value to each reader but it may be helpful if I suggest some of the questions to which Burns and his Wharton School collaborators respond.

1. What does the health care value chain consist of and how does it work?

2. What are the major pathways and stumbling blocks to improved value chain operations?

3. Which are the most effective strategies used by manufacturers in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and medical-surgical product areas?

4. Which are the most effective strategies used by group purchasing organizations and wholesaler/distributors?

5. What do the health care value chain and the "extended enterprise" found in the auto industry share in common? So what?

It is important to keep in mind that this book was published in 2002. There have been several significant developments within the health care industry since then, several of which Burns and his Wharton School collaborators examine in The Business of Healthcare Innovation (published in August, 2005). I take this opportunity to recommend, also, Steven J. Spear's article, "Fixing Health Care from the Inside, Today" which appeared in the September 2005 issue of Harvard Business Review.

For whom will this book be most valuable? In my opinion, there are two separate groups. The first consists of teachers and students associated with undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate programs such as those offered by the Wharton Center for Health Management and Economics. The second group would include senior-level executives of organizations which are (a) producers of health care products, (b) purchasers of these products, or (c) health care providers that are the end users of these products. I presume to observe that decision-makers in any one of these three categories would be well-advised to understand its inter-relationships with the other two.

In the concluding chapter of this book, Burns and John R. Kimberly suggest that in order to avoid the failure of prior organizational innovation (e.g. integrated health care), "the revamped health care value chain must find parties willing to pay for it." Given the nature and extent of the investment required, it seems imperative that all of those involved share the costs as well as the benefits of organizational innovation. According to Burns and his Wharton associates, there is no acceptable alternative.

Excellent Industry Overview

For anyone working in the manufacturing or distribution industry within pharmaceutical, diagnostic or medical device companies, this book offers an excellent oversight. Its very helpful for anyone doing business analyst work in a technology department who is new to the industry, but wants to come up to speed rapidly. I recommend it for everyone in my department.

Its rare that a good overview of an industry value chain is available and so accessible to help someone understand how an industry operates.

Comprehensive Analysis

The author can be forgiven for writing a book that reads a little more like a formal academic paper, given his illustrious credentials. However, it is a surprisingly comfortable read given the complexity of the industry (if you could call it one industry) and the material covered. His analysis is as comprehensive as it is thought provoking. He does an excellent job of portraying the myriad of complex relationships between various evermore technologically sophisticated players within the health value chain. I would have preferred more coverage and discussion of specific company/organizational profiles. But, his artful and deft handling of the complex subject matter presented in a way that gives the reader many "aha" moments makes this book a must-read for anyone serious about the business of healthcare.

Unbiased, Informed Financial Advice in Easy-to-Understand Form

Most people don't have time to read dozens of books about personal finance and investing. Even if people did have that much time, they would seldom be able to integrate what different authors had to say into a consistent approach.

For several decades, people have been asking me what one book they could read to be more successful with their personal finances. Until now, I've been reluctant to pick any one book. Instead, I would usually provide a list of 6-8.

Having read The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing, I can now safely recommend one book for the first time: This one!

Taylor Larimore, Mel Lindauer and Michael LeBouef have five important advantages over other personal finance authors:

1. They are experienced investors.

2. They are well read on the subject of personal finance.

3. They've been answering questions for years from those who want to know what to do on Morningstar Vanguard forum and its related site, diehards.org

4. They are an expert writing team rather than a writer or celebrity trying to be supported by experts.

5. They aren't trying to sell you anything except their book which makes their advice more independent than usual.

The book's range is impressive. Part I looks at the essential elements of successful investing and includes looking at your financial lifestyle, how to start investing young and regularly, different types of financial instruments, inflation-protected bonds, investing minimums, avoiding complications that lose you money, asset allocation, reducing costs, minimizing and deferring taxes, diversification, market timing, money for college, employing a windfall and whether to retain a financial advisor.

Part II looks at how to track your progress and rebalance assets, staying immune from daily "news" about investing, being in control of your emotions, building up enough money for retirement, asset protection through insurance and estate planning.

The book tackles head on a lot of the bad advice you get about investing, while also being realistic about how much time and effort most of us want to put into financial planning. The tone is friendly, the advice is good and the warnings are appropriate.

Sought and found!

"Seek and you shall find" is the perfect way for me to describe my experience with this book!

Before finding this gem of a book, I was reading several success books this year like "Success Principles" by Canfield, "Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude" by Hill & Stone, "The Richest Man in Babylon" by Clason, "The Templeton Plan" by Sir Templeton, to name a few. One book led to another and I ended up with "Smart Couples Finish Rich" by David Bach, which led me to Graham's "The Intelligent Investor". I first read Graham's 1972 edition (thanks to LA public library) and was looking for more current examples, so I purchased the 2003 edition with commentaries by Jason Zweig, which proved to be a very worthwhile upgrade.

While looking up some things I didn't understand online, I repeatedly came across the bogleheads forum, so I signed up as a free member and asked a question. The bogleheads were so helpful that I not only got my question answered, but also understood that the people there were genuinely trying to help. One of the bogleheads led me to a forum page which had book recommendations, so I purchased the kindle edition of this book.

And the moment I started reading the book, I knew this book had the answers for most of my questions. I finished reading it in two days! I just wanted to do this homework done asap and take care of my 401(K)s and IRAs. I had done a big timing mistake six years ago and went highly conservative (80% bonds, 10% stocks and 10% REITs). Luckily it was before the crash, so I had netted some profits, but I waited too long to get in to stocks again. Then I changed jobs and never paid attention! And the stock market had its best bull run for the past 5 years (no one told me!)! Wish I had put my money in a target retirement fund and went to sleep, but that wasn't the case :-(

"We have no hidden agendas. We aren't financial planners or money managers looking for clients. We don't have a high-powered, get-rich-quick weekend seminar to sell you. We are all well over 70 years of age, financially secure, and haven't missed a meal yet. If you want to read the book at the bookstore, the library, or borrow it from a friend, that's fine with us."
So you are not getting a book that just skims a few things and then asks you to look into the authors' other books or their youtube channel or sign up for their weekly digest!

The book begins with a quick introduction on the philosophy of borrowing vs. spending vs. saving and investing. The initial chapters have some valuable general advice (like car buying and running a part-time business, for example). But the main content is all about sound investing principles, facts and strategies. The book also discusses enough about taxes, which a lot of investing books seem to just skim or totally ignore. There is also enough material covering how to manage one's emotions when investing. I found some of the material to be like "Ben Graham Simplified".

This is one of the very few books that has the guts to not lick the boots of network marketing businesses. (I have personally wasted a lot of my time and money in one such business.) Most other "success authors" would like to sell their books to network marketing businesses in bulk, so they mostly praise some company or the other. My personal experience coincides with those of the authors in that you are better off financially by staying away from network marketing businesses. If you are business-minded, the authors recommend running a business you are really passionate about which coincides with your interests, education and/or experience. Couple the income you produce from your job and/or business with the investing principles explained in this book, you will have a solid plan and a financially successful life!

Solid Guide To A Powerful Investing Strategy

I first became aware of the power of compound interest from studying guys like Tony Robbins and Brian Tracy. They go on and on about how you need to set aside a certain amount every month/year and let it compound into millions over time. That's fine and well, but I could never really figure out a way to implement the strategy. Safe, predictable returns are next to impossible to come by these days. The Bogleheads and Jack Bogle preach the power of compound interest as well, but they actually provide a way to go about getting it. Investing in low-fee index funds and holding them long-term is the method. This book gives an excellent, detailed rundown of how to implement this kind of investment plan. It has a few more stats and minutiae than I might have liked, but overall it is a solid read. This is a simple strategy, but a very effective one. I encourage you to buy this book if you are tired of complicated investment strategies that get you nowhere and brokerage companies that charge you ridiculous fees. However, be forewarned, it takes a long time to make serious money using this strategy. And by a long time, I mean decades.

3 1/2 stars, this was a really quick hot read. Luke and Kimberly have lived next door to each other for several years and they have both been attracted to the other but nothing has ever come of it. Luke is thirty and a womanizer and Kimberly is twenty and just learning who she is. Kimberly never thought Luke would want her and Luke knew he wasn't good enough for Kimberly.

Right before Kimberly is scheduled to go back to college her parents go on a vacation leaving her alone. Kimberly planned on relaxing before going back to school she never thought her weekend would include Luke. Luke tried to resist Kimberly but can't any longer so he goes to Kimberly. Luke and Kimberly end up spending an unforgettable weekend together. But Kimberly and Luke will have to decide if a weekend will be enough, and what to do when others find out about their weekend.

This is a good novella that is filled from beginning to end. I liked it but wished it was longer so that we could have gotten more from Luke and Kimberly. But with that being said for how long it was Sam Crescent did a great job. This is a great read if you want something fast and steamy,

Jonathan Little is a professional poker player from Pensacola who started playing poker when he was 18 and quickly became one of the biggest winners in online sitngo tournaments. Worth its prize

I probably have more than 60 poker books and I have read them all at least twice. For people who want to be competitive in MTTs as they are currently played, I think that Little's book is kind of essential. This first volume presents a number of valuable information, mainly about how to play the big stack. It is pretty much on the LAG side from the style perfective, and therefore I would suggest to read it just before reading the Elky's recent book. The reason why I did not give it a 5 stars, is that I found the section on how to play the re-shove stack a bit too short. That section would have profit of a more extensive analysis of different opponents stacks, stats and position opening in order to derive optimal re-shove ranges. I am looking forward the second volume.

Perfect for transitioning cash-to-tourney poker players.

Jonathan Little really had me intrigued from the opening chapter of his book "Secrets of Professional Tournament Poker" with the premise that cash players have essentially struggled to adapt to the differing stack sizes and dealing with how they constantly change as a tournament progresses. This concept really applied to someone like me who makes a living playing cash games and had just ignored tournaments completely pior to this book, thinking that they were just super high variance luckfests. However, after some insight, Little makes a strong case for live tournaments actually being the best form of game selection there is in all of poker, which was no small feat considering my mentality prior to reading his book. With that premise in mind, Little has written this book very well as it just appeals so much to cash game players who do not understand tournament poker - as he has tailored his writing in book this with these kinds of players in mind. Thanks JL, won't look back.

This book is absolute gold - in the introduction the author says that he will put a lot of effort into giving away how to play tournament poker and i think that is true. Coming from the Hartington school, this book really opened my eyes to how professional tournament poker is being played today. I read it straight through cover to cover and then played a few tournaments applying the concepts and now constantly refer to it as I review my play. I have seen some criticisms that there are no tabulations of starting hands etc but I feel this misses the point. The book tries to get you to think for yourself, adapt to the table, and, as the author says, 'any hand can conceivably raised from any position'.

About the Author
Irving Stone was born in San Francisco on July 14, 1903. He wrote several books in a genre that he coined the “biographical novel,” which recounted the lives of well-known historical figures. In these novels, Stone interspersed biography with fictional narrative on the psychology and private lives of his subjects. He also wrote biographies of Clarence Darrow and Earl Warren, and short biographies of men who lost presidential elections. He died on August 26, 1989.

A Masterpiece of a Book

I originally purchased this book out of curiosity. I wanted to learn about and study a genius' life. A lover of art and design, I was naturally drawn to Michelangelo. After a substantial research on the best biographies based on his life and work, I was more than convinced that this book was it. And it didn't disappoint me at all!

I had never been to Italy when I started reading. A few months later, my sister and I planned a weekend in Europe, and partly because of this book, I convinced my sister we had to spend a weekend in Rome. Shortly after, I spent a week in Florence, and it was the very first time I felt like an informed tourist, knowing what I was marveling at.

The Agony and the Ecstasy is a novel-like biography of Michelangelo intertwined with historical accounts and facts about his life. It is written in such a way you won't want to put the book down. I felt like I lived inside Michelangelo's head; like I really got to know his person, simultaneously studying art and design history. It's set during the Italian Renaissance, and Michelangelo was a central figure of that glorious period. The book is filled with information. So far, it is the most substantial book I've read, and it's the first time I've taken my time reviewing a book.

The book is by no means an easy read; It took me weeks to finish. In fact, when I first bought it, I had to set it aside before I made it halfway, and I had to re-read it from the start. As I read the last pages, my heart ached as Michelangelo was getting weaker and weaker. It was quite an experience feeling like I lived side by side such a genius. All the masterpieces he forged during his life—just wow!

This book has sparked a deeper interest in me for art and design, and now for a newfound love: sculpture.

Even better the second time around.

I first read this book when it originally came out. And when my book club decided to read it, I didn't object because I remembered that I liked it. Well, I think I enjoyed it more the second time. I was fascinated by the historical background and learned a lot about that time period....and about the making of sculpture. The characters were fleshed out enough to be interesting and added information to what I had learned in history classes--although as in all historical fiction, it would be nice to know what is real and what is the author's imagination. The book is well written and an easy and interesting read. If you are planning a trip to Italy, I would definitely put it on my pre-trip reading list.

When history, art and storytelling team up

When I first received the recommendation to read it, I thought that it would be a boring description of times long gone with a silver lining in the art itself.

Boy was I wrong !

It is an incredible journey through time with twists and plots that revolve around art, religion, politics as well as romance, friendship and family.
It is a story about the struggle to follow your passion to whatever end. It is the kind of book that left me with a sense of "OK.. now what? What could I read to be on par with Mr. Stone's creation?"

Let's say that from now on, I will never look at sculpture or art as a whole with the same eyes.

Even though I knew that it was a biography work, I still read it like a fiction book and this helped putting me in every situation described.

Being tired isn't the same as being rich

One could dismiss "Fight Club" as a predictable techno-thriller about testosterone-driven males, alienated from society, who find salvation in fighting other guys, bare-knuckled, in dark basements, until one of them goes limp. But that would miss the more interesting archetypal point Palahniuk explicitly trying to make. This is a book about the psychological development of a young man who had no father to help him make sense of the postmodern world, his split-off shadow, and ultimately the healing power of coming into a relationship with that raw, disturbing underground part of himself. The ego must be willing to inflict the blow itself, and strong enough to survive it.

"Fight Club" is an imperfect novel. But Palahniuk's ambitious attempt to suggest that our efforts to integrate disowned parts of ourselves could help free our psyche from the grip of corporate power and pervasive consumerism is enough to make it interesting. For all people who care about finding out the truth about who they are, this novel is a virtual manifesto!

A Must Read

So complex, so dark, so full of surprises. I adore this book. The movie was an excellent adaptation, but the book is so much more! Such emotionally exhilarating characters full of honest pain, angst, and raw determination to hang to the bottom of life and not only live, but thrive. Tyler's character, emotionally abusive, scalding, and toxic, is so enrapturing you follow suit with his victims and it's easy to see why he's lovable with all his flaws. Smooth talking, angry, and deceptive, it's easy to follow along with the space monkeys if one would listen to him talk long enough. That is pure talent in the writing arena, to have such a multi-dimensional character. Hands-down, one of my favorite books. I wish I had read it sooner because in the darkest of times, it was definitely a therapeutic read.

Just Buy This Book

Great book, no matter how many times I read it I learn something new. Obviously Fight Club is about violence, but it's about fighting and how men are trying to claim back their natural born masculinity in a day and age where we are told to be white collar workers and work cushy day jobs behind a computer monitor, requesting "cornflower blue." There's some sexual content, like in the movie, and whether I should describe this as written in first person or second person is beyond me. After all, the guy has split personalities. So what do I put here? Hmmmm. Whatever. Just buy this book.
