About the Author
Mois�s Kaufman is a Tony and Emmy-nominated director and�playwright. He is the�co-founder and artistic director of Tectonic Theater Project.�Kaufman’s plays�Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde,�and�The Laramie Project�(which he co-wrote with the members of Tectonic Theater) have been among the most performed plays in America over the last decade. He is also the author of the Tony Nominated play�33 Variations;�One Arm�(his adaptation of the Tennessee Williams screenplay of the same name); and the short play�London Mosquitoes.�He has directed numerous plays on Broadway including�the Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning�I Am My Own Wife�by Doug Wright which earned Mr. Kaufman an Obie Award for direction as well as�Tony, Outer Critics, Lucille Lortell, Drama Desk Awards nominations. Kaufman directed the film adaptation of�The Laramie Project, which aired on HBO and was the opening night selection at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. Kaufman is a Guggenheim Fellow.

one of several recent plays/movies about the trials of Oscar Wilde

This is a good play that tells the story of the three trials of Oscar Wilde that occurred in the mid-1890s. A series of down-on-their luck young men testified against Wilde that he had corrupted them. The authorities gave Wilde a few separate attempts to flee to France, but Wilde chose to stand up for his convictions (and thus, martyrdom) rather than flee. He was ultimately sentenced to a few years of hard labor, was injured while doing so, and eventually died from his injuries a few years out of prison.

The story is told in a jig saw fashion, with bits from various books and different accounts. George Bernard Shaw makes a delightful appearance as well. This play came out in 1998, a few short years after "Don't Ask Don't Tell" and at the beginning of the crescendo of the culture wars. At the time, it was a seminal piece that showed how wrongly gay people were attacked (this takes place in Victorian England, but there is little difference if you go forward 50 years or back 500).

Read (or seen) 18 years later, it has a different feel after Lawrence v. Texas (2003), Obergefell v Hodges (2015) and the general acceptance of gays around the developed world. It is still poignant and significant, but now details the horrors and injustices that gays lived with before a more enlightened and humane era.

Beautiful = gross understatement.

Read this for a literary project, coming from Shaffer's Amadeus. While not from the same era, it certainly has the same "interacting with two different time frames, with flashbacks" aspect of Shaffer's work. I'd definitely recommend it.

Tapestries have been a way to get the big picture fast – and Tapestry: The Book of Revelation adeptly offers an overview of the marvelous and mysterious book of Revelation.

But it is no simple synopsis.

It is a well-written, pastoral application of seemingly incompressible visions. Dr. Parkinson’s book is as pithy as a coach’s comments to a sports team taking on a powerful opposing team – and as gentle as a friend urging another to take the next step on an unknown path.

Tapestry is “a redressed series of sermons” he preached in the fall of 2005 – sermons, I heard. What I heard then was both challenging and comforting, given the times through which we were living, post 9/11. How much more valuable are they now, ten years later!

Dr. Parkinson wants us to develop a faith for the real world – “But real-world faith requires that we first see the world.” (Tapestry, page 5) That was the reason God revealed His view of the world to John, who used “word pictures [to] describe characteristics of the entire age of the gospel expansion that culminates in the return of Christ and his establishment of Paradise.”

The picture may have made more sense to a first century saint than a twenty-first century one – but the whole message is quite simple.

"[P]ersevere though terrible tribulation until Christ returns to bring new age to replace the one we are in. That’s it. That’s the message of Revelation, and it’s all in the first three chapters.

The rest of the book burns this message into our souls." (page 9)

He writes that reading Revelation is like walking blindfolded beside John down a long corridor as describes to us a series of paintings – or tapestries, like the Bayeux Tapestry – a handbook, if you will of the Norman Conquest. Dr. Parkinson doesn’t attach what John saw to a timeline, whether he was on Patmos, or transported into the Throne Room. God showed John the Church, and the tribulation as the gospel expands, until the Lord returns. (p. 16)

As we must keep an open Bible when pastors preach, keep your Bible open when you plow through these nine chapters – and be willing to dig! Commentaries may be useful – but Dr. Parkinson’s approach is reading the book of Revelation for we are at war, even if the days seem tranquil.

Christ told his people to be ready for his return – for our well-being in hard times. (Matthew 24:42-44)

Turn that around and you have the message of Revelation: until Christ comes back, this is what our world will look like. So stay faithful until he returns.

"And return he will. The horsemen will trample, the false prophet will preach lies, the beast will roar and the prostitute will seduce until all seems lost.

Then, out of nowhere, a bugle will sound the charge." (p.99)

Masterfully done! A view of the end times in a very logical sense. Not so much about trying to establish a time line but realistically a look at the Christian faith and God's requirement that we stay faithful and endure until his return. A very refreshing and logical read.

An honest account from an honest man.

“Cometh the hour, cometh the man” is an adage that was penned for men such as General H. Norman Schwarzkopf.

It is very easy for Englishman to prefer British heroes over those from other countries. Some might say it is even easier for United States citizens to acknowledge the achievements of their own citizens whilst deprecating those of any other nation. Eisenhower, for example, was a great man - but so was Montgomery!

This book, however, is about a man who is not in open comparison to any. He tells an account of his own life which, as others have already stated, is so honest as to be brutally so. How odd that the fickle finger of fate is able to steer any man towards his ultimate destiny. What if Eisenhower (or even Montgomery) had joined the Navy?, what if Norman Schwarzkopf had railed against his father’s wishes and “not” joined the US Army?

But they did and I am unable to avoid that clich� which demands that “the rest is history.” Having said that, I would suggest General Schwarzkopf’s contribution to that history is as great as any man’s.

Other reviewers have sought to express their views in their own ways and quite rightly so! Some of those reviews give the reader a quick impression – “it’s a great book” and all that, whereas others seek to paraphrase the book and, is so doing give the reader a better impression of what is found within it’s pages.

Me, well, for the very first time in a long time, I feel as though I have read a book. Just think about that. Some of those books are on subjects I feel very passionate about. Some are great books and well worth the 5 star rating given. Then I find a biography from a retired general who came to prominence during the first Gulf War, the biography of a man who recognised it does not take a hero to order men into battle, the biography of an ordinary bloke who did good, served his country and the cause of freedom well and expects nothing in return.

Buy it. Read it. Only then will you also appreciate what I mean by having “read” a book. There will come a time when you will read it again.

This book distinguishes itelf from other HRM introductory texts buy focusing on the integration of HR with the business and organization. Its breadth and depth are very impressive. The text has an international quality, providing insights into circumstances and issues in many countries. Be aware, however, that because it is written by an emeritus professor in the UK, sections relating to law, and many specific references, are limited in applicability; if this is a problem, it can be worked around for students of other nations. Overall, this is an excellent introduction to human resource management. Every chapter includes further reading, review questions and problems for discussion.

History and Fiction, All Rolled Up Into One Magnificent Story!

I became curious about reading this book after learning that the main character was somewhat designed after that of Temple Houston, Sam Houston's son. I had no expectations, and oh my - how delighted I was to discover this wonderful author! How can you go wrong with beautiful writing and an exciting story, set over a period of years where so many changes took place in this Oklahoma territory? It is a great story about a family of unforgettable characters, who move to a town in Oklahoma during the late 1800's. I highly recommend this book for those who are interested in this time period, and those that just love a great story.
