A great Christmas reading.

This sweet short story will keep you warm on a cold night. A misunderstanding that destroyed a friendship. As adult women, struggling with competition, hate, insecurities and family trouble. This book puts you in the spirit of a wonderful Christmas. I really enjoyed it.

Carolyn for Christmas by Lucy Carey is a contemporary story with two lesbian heroines, Carolyn Roche and Saoirse Barrett.

I really enjoyed this short story. Lucy Carey did a beautiful job showing us the characters’ present and past relationship, both written in both heroines’ POVs.

Once upon a time, Carolyn and Saoirse were best friends. They did everything together until one horrible rainy day when everything came crashing down.

Carolyn was raised by a single mother and lived on the “wrong side the tracks” in Saorise’s father’s opinion.

Now in their mid-twenties, they’re both fighting for a solo in their small town’s Christmas eve production.

Carolyn wants this solo so badly because her mother is dying from cancer, and this will be the last performance she’ll get to see her perform in.

Saoirse wants this because she wants to prove to her uptight father that she can do something, be something. With her “gay phase” not over yet, he doesn’t seem to see her shine.

When auditioning, they both sit back and notice how beautiful the other is. For a split second, they both let their guards down and just take in each others’ splendor—not only their physical beauty, but their transcendent voice. They both believe the other is well and truly deserving of the solo—until they wake up from their haze and remember that they hate each other.

After the director chooses who’s doing the solo, both ladies are somehow locked in the building. They can find no open exits, or an unlocked office with a phone. They find their way into the staff room and discover the vodka hidden there, so they get drunk and secrets are unveiled.

I enjoyed the way Carolyn for Christmas was written, letting us meet Carolyn and Saoirse as they are now and then giving us glimpses into their past. It made me so curious as to why two best friends would cut ties completely.

A WONDERFULLY CHOREOGRAPHED PIECE OF WRITING

We also got insight into both their family lives, and how they became who they are. It really is a wonderfully choreographed piece of writing, and I adored every page.

A wonderful story

This healing story about two best friends separated by a combination of class difference, bigotry, and an overly controlling parent just as their feelings were shifting from friendship to something more and how an accidental chance to talk about things brings them into each other's arms, where they belong. The characters are realistic and well developed, especially considering how short the story is, and the story brought a tear to my eye more than once.

My mom bought the whole series for my 7 year old daughter. So loving these books! It teaches the kids that even as kids you can aspire to change the world! She absolutely loves these books! Cannot wait for more to be added to the series.

Helpful for some

So I read about half of this book, I didn't read the parts not relevant to me like car rental. I was hoping for some international travel tips as I am going to Europe in a month, but they were few and far between. It seemed to me like this book was a compilation of travel tips from many different websites, and that many of them were obvious (like to book far in advance) but to be fair, I also learned facts I never would have known, like that flights are cheapest Tuesday mornings and right when they are released. A good read overall, very general for travel anywhere.

Great tips for any traveler

This e-book is filled with great tips. I thought I was pretty savvy in terms of saving money on the road, but Davidson's got all kinds of tricks and techniques that I would have never thought of. Check out his 'using technology' chapter- I knew about Kayak, but there are several other apps and sites that I didn't know of, and they're customized based on your GPS location! If you've got a smartphone, these tips can turn your smartphone into a mini travel agent in your pocket. Nice.

Excellent textbook on philosophy

I purchased this book for a class and was very impressed by the thorough and interesting way the material was presented. Many philosophical views are considered and brought to light from a Christian perspective as well. It is a great resource tool for me to use in the future.

Definitely one of the toughest things you can do is have to seperate and get a divorce from someone you thought was the one! And even harder can be moving on after. Often the whole experience is filled with negativity, but you have to turn the other way! Thats why I like the stand point that this book reads from, it looks at the big picture and getting over the fact of the divorce without trying to blame anyone or hurt anyone!
If you have had to go through divorce and even if you think you are okay, you should at least check out the book and skim thorugh it. The ideas are universal and can be multi-applied wherever necessary!

Get yourself up from the slump

Marriage is a matter or principle. Inevitably, a 'third party' will come to both partners' lives and it's up to them to act ON it or act AGAINST it. Though infidelity isn't what's the prime reason for a divorce, compatiblity on other aspects is also one out of the many. The author couldn't be more true when a partner becomes too afraid of the unfamiliar, this could work FOR the "family" but could work AGAINST the suffering partner. The guidelined were crystal clear. It's a good read for people who want to get themselves up from the slump.

I bought this book for a friend of mine who was having a difficult time going through her divorce. Part of the pain came from the fact that her husband left her but I was hoping it would be a help in a very difficult time in her life. I am glad to report that she did say that it has helped her to focus on other areas of her life and has given her a new purpose. It doesn't mean that she isn't sad sometimes but she wants to move on and be positive and the book has helped her with that.

Divine inside - us all?

First of all, I get a kick out of a Comp Sci IT guy writing a book on Spirituality. Really/ We are some of the most hard-nosed, skeptical, GEEKISH people out there. You have to really "wipe our noses" in something for is to believe in something outside the physical here and now. However, in order to build all that tech people like to have, we do need to see outside the box into what could be... So, ok - I can see that, I guess.

I really enjoyed the definitions, the explanations, the who's-who in the beginning. It sets the stage for what comes: the journeys these authors took. Even a skeptic would admit the descriptions of what they saw, said and did seems beyond mere imagination. Well-written, and enjoyable, and makes me want to see, but perhaps not DO, everything in the book. I would not be up to trying some of that. But then, I don't think I would be called (called?) the same way. *grin*

WOW! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

WOW! And that word does not even cover all the feelings, elation and answers I got from reading this book. Not only did it help me with questions I had about the Divine, but helped me feel SO normal with all that I personally have experienced on many levels. I could NOT put this book down! I walked away from this book feeling so serene and happy beyond words and HUNGRY for more in hopes this Author writes more books on this journey with the Divine! If you only have time to read one book I URGE you to Read this one. So much insight and answers you will find in this book, it will help you on many levels and help you find not only the Divinity in yourself but in All life on this earth. I found this to be an Extremely Information book on Many Levels and again I HIGHLY Recommend it! :-)

we are all connected

Wonderfully, written from a story teller point of view easy to understand how we are all connect to each other and to the Divine. We follow their adventures from the beginning (baby steps) of their journey to that connection. The book also helps ease the fears of what is beyond and understand what happens next.

There are great exercises at the end of the book to help develop astral travel and meditation.

Using the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a case study – an object of Western intervention since colonial times –� this book scrutinizes the contemporary practice of humanitarian intervention from the inside. It seeks to expose how humanitarian aid and peacekeeping works, what obstacles they encounter and how they manage to retain their legitimacy. By examining the relationship between the West and the DR Congo, this volume asks why intervention continues to be so central for the relationship between Western and local spheres. Why is it normal and self-evident? The main answer developed here is that the separation of these two spheres allows intervention to enjoy sufficient degrees of legitimacy to be sustained. Owing to the contradictions that surface when juxtaposing the Western and Congolese spheres, this book highlights how keeping them separate is key to sustaining intervention. Bridging the divide between the liberal peace debate in International Relations and anthropologies of humanitarianism, this volume thus presents an important contribution to taking both the legitimizing proclamations and ‘local’ realities of intervention seriously.
