Love Comes Blindly (The Fielding Brothers Saga Book 5), by Marie Higgins

If love isn’t blind to past indiscretions, can absence truly make the heart grow fonder?

Gregory Fielding has been wounded when he travels to Scotland to find the next big story for his London newspaper. Now blinded, he relies on the soft, comforting touch of one of the nurses at St. Mary’s Abbey. He thinks she’s a novice, but that doesn’t stop him from wanting to give her his heart.

Madeline O’Neil cannot believe her misfortune. The man she had almost married three years ago is back in her life. Gregg doesn’t know who she is and she doesn’t dare tell him. Not until she makes him like the new Madeline. But as each day passes and her heart grows fonder, she fears he’ll hate her for certain once his eyesight returns. Especially when he discovers the secret she’s been keeping from him for three years…

****
“Where am I?”

“You are at St. Mary’s Abbey,” Madeline told the injured man on the cot.

“Am I…blind?”

Her throat tightened and her eyes stung with unshed tears. She could not predict his fate, but she didn’t know what to tell him. “The doctor used healing cream on your eyes. He hasn’t said how long your condition will last. Your fate is in God’s hands now.”

His mouth tightened in a thin line and he fell silent. She didn’t know what to say, and especially what to do, but she had to do something to ease his agony.

“Sir? Is there anything I can do for you? Would you like me to write a letter to your family?”

After a few silent minutes, he nodded. “Thank you. That is very kind. I’m certain my family would worry if they don’t hear from me.”

She collected paper and quills from a bureau drawer. “Begin any time you are ready, sir.”

“Address it to my brother, Nicholas. He is the head of the family now.”

Although Nicholas was a popular name in England, every time she heard it she thought of Gregg Fielding since this was his older brother. Such a kind an endearing man Nicholas had been to her…before the truth had come out, anyway.

She wrote fast to keep up with his dictation. He mentioned the newspaper in London that he owned, and asked his brother to take care of his country estate and townhouse. He made no mention of a wife or children, and she almost breathed a sigh of relief that he didn’t have a family depending on his income.

As he talked, his voice softened, and familiarity struck an odd chord in her memory. Where had she heard his voice before? Had she met him once? Or did he remind her of someone she’d known?

While growing up, she lived in London and Essex. Since she left that area almost three years ago, all ties to her past were severed. She couldn’t bring shame to her family. She was needed here in Scotland with these good Sisters. Now Madeline’s life had meaning. But what were the odds she’d known this man before?

When he ended his dictation, his voice tightened. Her eyes misted again. Obviously, he loved his family and his life at the newspaper. She prayed he would see again. Only God knew the outcome.

“Sir? I will send this letter as soon as possible, but I need your name first.”

“Oh, forgive me. I suppose my brain isn’t functioning too well.” Slowly, he lifted his hand again to his bandaged head. “My head is throbbing and it’s hard to concentrate.”

“I understand.”

Once his hand dropped to the cot, he breathed deeply. “My name is Gregory Fielding.”

The name from the past hit her like a physical blow to her chest. She gasped and quickly covered her mouth with her hand. Gregg?

She jumped to her feet as her heart hammered. Dizziness threatened her vision and she feared she would swoon. No, she mustn’t. She had to remain strong. After three years and being this close to starting a new life, how could fate throw into her path the one man she’d wronged so badly? No matter what, she couldn’t let Gregg know who helped him. He hated her. Thankfully, he couldn’t see. Her identity must stay a secret.

As did her other secret that he must never discover.

Ended too soon
By Kindle Customer
I was enjoying the story so much I did not want it to end. I liked the mystery of how it would work out between Gregory and Madeline. Of course, you know they will work it out and be together, but how? Like the rest of the Fielding Brothers Saga, I enjoyed the various characters in the stories, the references to the characters as they appeared in previous stories. Made me feel like a distant member of the family knowing each brother. Enjoyed all of her stories and how she managed to pull the brothers into each story in a way that I could place each brother back in their story of the previous books. I read these books to be entertained and that I have been. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read this type of escape for a few hours.

Great finish to a series!
By Lin B
I've never read an author before that captured my interest from the very beginning of Book 1 in a series right through to the end of Book 5. Marie Higgins is GREAT!! She knows how to keep your interest and you want the characters to work out their problems and live happily ever after so you can start the next one in the series!! When I finished the last one I was hungry for more! I've found my new favorite author!!

So glad Madeline is back
By RomanceReader
This is my second favorite in the Fielding brothers series--next to True Love's Deception. I had wondered what happened to Madeline...this book picks up her story 3 years after Juliana kicks her out. Greg is back too....and he is sweeter in this book than any other. Great story but read book 3 (True Love's Deception) before you read this one.

Working with respected experts, often on-site, he has added photos, sources, and five years of additional research to his previous work. This is a walk through the idyllic ancient Mediterranean you will long remember.

An old book recently updated.
By S. Cranow
I read the author's first book on the Phoenicians a few years ago and thought it was great. I learned a lot about the Phoenicians and their contributions to the development of the Mediterranean that I never knew before or could even imagine. When I bought this book I was expecting to learn something new. Short I was in the expectation of this book continuing where the other one left off. You can well understand my disappointment when I thought to myself while reading this book that hmm I read this before. I was read a few more chapters into the book it dawned on me that this was the same book just a different title.

As I read further on I realized that there was up to 30-40% new information. An update of an older work. Would have been nice if they kept the same title. Then again I might now have invested in the book. The book is a great read for the lay man. It is not burdened with overly academic language and vocabulary and it is very understandable. Such easy reading is refreshing. There is one drawback though and that is the lack of footnotes. I want to track down some of this information. Some of it I have questions about and want to make further inquiries, a bit difficult if the footnotes are not in place. In short I would advise getting this book as opposed to the older one. In fact the author's website is advertising this book not the old one. Very telling.

The Phoenicians are a fascinating group of people. The book give a great surface over view of that. The group started out in Byblos, a city by the sea. At first they were fishermen who made their living from the sea. Their first boats were made from dugout Cedar logs. Eventually their boat building became more advanced and they began trading with distant villages. The result what a rising standard of living. They hit the jackpot with Egypt. Egypt bought lots of timber for their Temple dedicated to Horus in Hierankopolis. The First Pharoah to unite the divided land was their best customer. The author has some new information here detailing the rise of Egypt from the Scorpion king, Aha Menas etc.

The Phoenician expanded their base of trade to the Mediterranean Sea basin and the Aegean. They traded with Cyprus, and founded colonies in Santorini, Malta and Gozo. They brought wares from different places and traded them all over their network. They kept their sources a secret. Secrecy was one of their principles. The Phoenician found a race of people who built nice temple to the Mother Goddess. The Phoenicians being great middle men introduced them to the Egyptians who hired them to build their pyramids. Strange that one day all the inhabitants of the island disappeared. The Egyptians may have taken them enmasse to build their pyramids.

The Pheonicians were of Canaanite stock but they were way different from the other Canaanites. For one they worshiped mother nature an eventually added in a horned god. The Canaanite were more warlike and had a pantheon of gods. One of the Phoenician secrets was to negotiate rather then fight. They also blended in with the others so it was hard to tell the difference. Women were also treated equally and their input was valued.

When the Amorites continued in conquering their main city Byblos rather than fight they made for themselves a new home. They packed up and shipped off to Crete. In Crete they blended in with the locals and formed the Minoan empire. Prior to the Minoan
Empire the Phoenicians set up up other Cities along the Lebanese coast. Cities like Sidon, Arwad and Tyre. As they settled Crete many would leave Tyre and Sidon and those areas were abandoned for up to 500 years after.

The Myceneans were the ones who would change things for the Phoenicians. They were aggressive and warlike. Eventually they would storm the island of Crete. The Phoenicians would simply pack up and leave when negotiations failed them. They ended up resettling their old cities. Things still started looking down for the Phoenicians. Their trading partners, the Egyptians got more and more aggressive. The Hittites rose to power and were hostile as well. The volcano on Santorini exploded destroying numerous Phoenicians colonies in the Aegean. New trading centers arose like Ugarit who offered stiff competition.

Salvation would come in the form of the Kaska people who lived near the Black sea area and were oppressed by the Hittites. The Phoenicians made friends with them and let them to have use of their ships. This provoked in an invasion of the Sea Peoples and they would storm the Aegean and the entire Middle East. All the obstacle the Phoenicians faced were obliterated. Everyone experienced conflict save for the Phoenicians.

Things went great for while until the Greeks started expanding out. They were rather aggressive. They would expand out under the Alexander the Great. Alexander sacked the entire middle east those that surrender were treated mercifully cities like Tyre who put up great resistance for 9 months faced horrible consequences. Tyre was an island city that held out against the Assyrians for 13 years before their leader finally gave up. The other cities just joined in and Hellenized.

Once colony that was immune to all of this was Carthage, set up by wealthy Phoenicians they engaged in farming and became a regional power. Later on Rome would go to war with them in a series of wars called " The Punic Wars" Hannibal became famous from all of this. Eventually Rome won out and Carthage fell. The author believes the Phoenicians still live on. They might. You will have to read the book and find out for yourself.

Like Opening the Wardrobe Doors
By Casondra Sobieralski
Did you ever read "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" when you were a kid? If I am remembering correctly from fourth grade, the children in the story open the doors of the wardrobe and are transported to a magical kingdom. When I open "Phoenician Secrets", I am transported, and THAT is a treat. An escape FROM the desert where I moved for a job I love TO the sea where my heart soared for 18 years.

I think the reason I respond to the book thus is Holst's writing style. He approaches the history like story telling, suggesting a possible vision for time and place, and then he backs up that possible vision with ever-evolving theories based on an ever-growing database of archaeological evidence.

I also appreciate that the author pulls back the lens periodically to situate the Phoenician's gains and movement in the context of a larger Mediterranean snapshot. --while the Phoenicians were doing X at location Y, the Amorites were doing Z in location Q, for example. Mediterranean history is very much about comings, goings, and interrelations, thus this is vital to understanding the gestalt.

I am a multimedia artist who works with archaeologists, and this book reminds me why I worked my way into the field of Digital Heritage. --because I wanted to make antiquity come alive through factually supported story telling. History doesn't have to be dense and dry. Learning doesn't have to require disciplining yourself to turn off your right brain and go into rigid linear tube thinking. His book is inspiring me and reinvigorated me professionally.

Steal away to a breezy quiet place with this book and be prepared to fly through a worm hole to a gentle place.

Brings the Past to Life
By Douglas Russell
Too many history books I've read are dry compendiums of alleged facts, dates, and names of politicians and war heroes. This author has the sensibilities of a novelist and poet, and he travels to some of the places he writes about. He researches thoroughly, acknowledges controversies among scholars, and distinguishes his impressions and opinions from historical facts. He is a master storyteller who brings the human aspect of the past alive in a way that motivates me to want to learn more.

Much too expensive for the content.
By Shawn C. Ragan
German for Reading Knowledge is geared for that: learning to read German. This book is not focused on conversational German, but rather for those (generally graduate students preparing for language exams) who only need to acquire the ability to read German. From my own experience, we are currently using this book within a classroom setting, but many will need a resource to study the language independently.

This book is arranged into twenty-five chapters (Kapitel) and consists of 318 pages. Each chapter contains the grammatical lesson, vocabulary, practice sentences (the answers are available on the website), and a paragraph or more of German text for translation. The lessons begin with the nominative case and sein ("to be") conjugations for present and passive, then the subsequent chapters build upon the grammar. The readings, from chapter 1, are complex and challenge the student. These readings start the student with reading German, which is the end goal. The Appendices include some review on the case system, verbs (though a review of conjugations would have been nice here), advice on purchasing a dictionary, German scripts, and vocabulary.

There are several concerns with this text, though. Firstly, while there is a vocabulary list in each chapter, it does not include all of the vocabulary presented in the chapter. There is a considerable amount of vocabulary throughout the chapter that is not included in the list, and it would have been nice if the chapter list included all of the presented vocabulary. Additionally, even starting in the first chapter, the sentences and readings contain vocabulary which is neither in the vocabulary list nor in the vocabulary in the back of the book (e.g. `zu' is used, with two different meanings, in the first reading), requiring a dictionary from the start. Secondly, the sentences and readings include grammatical information that is not presented until later lessons. One cannot be expected to translate a sentence when the necessary grammar is not taught until a later lesson. Thirdly, the book has errors. In my case, there is a professor to correct the errors (ranging from incorrect information to including references to sentences included in earlier editions but absent from the seventh).

Fourthly, and this is by far the greatest concern: This book is incredibly overpriced. Right now, it is selling for $115 on Amazon. This is a small paperback book and I can find *no* justification for the exorbitant price, especially considering the problems with the book. I have bought expensive academic books and monographs in the past, but those were typically hardcover books and of incredible quality. Even for an academic textbook, this book is not worth the price. If it was offered for under $40, and was used in a classroom setting with an instructor to help make up for the problems/deficiencies of the text, I would recommend it (with prejudice). At this price, however, and with the concerns mentioned above, I cannot recommend this book.

bought for class, 7th edition is full of errors
By Jonathan D
For a 100+ dollar book you would expect that there would not be as many errors. I had the third and sixth edition lying around as well, but had to have the 7th for a class. The sixth edition did not have as many errors as the 7th. Some of the mistakes will lead students seriously stray if not pointed out, and are not simple typos. If you have any say, get the sixth edition.

Poorly written and expensive
By YaleStudent
I'm a student who's taking a German for reading course where we use this textbook, and I cannot recommend it as a good introduction to German grammar. While some the of grammatical concepts are adequately (though never clearly) explained in the chapters, the organization and pedagogical approach of the book leaves much to be desired. Here are some examples:

1) In the Grundwortschatz (the main vocabulary entry after each chapter), vocabulary items are introduced multiple times and given different (and occasionally incorrect) meanings. The exercises, furthermore, gloss words which have already appeared in the Grundwortschatz but skip complex and infrequently used words which the students cannot possibly be expected to know. One reading, for example, glosses gehren zu (to belong to), which we have already encountered, but omits the words grokpfige (macrocephalic) and Fusohle.

2) The author himself frequently confuses important grammatical concepts. When "former" and "latter" are introduced, for example, the author misuses them in his own examples.

3) Vocabularies introduced in the Grundwortschatz are different from those used in the chapter: it would be much better to use words we have already learned to explain grammatical concepts!

4) As already mentioned, this book is overpriced. I come from a discipline where scholarly publications are pricey, but this book beats even OUP in that respect!

Everybody's America: Thomas Pynchon, Race, and the Cultures of Postmodernism (Studies in Major Literary Authors), by David Witzling

Everybody’s America reassesses Pynchon’s literary career in order to explain the central role played by the racialization of American culture in the postmodernist deconstruction of subjectivity and literary authority and in the crisis in white liberal culture. It charts the evolution of both these cultural transformations from Pynchon’s early short stories, composed in the late 1950s, through Gravity’s Rainbow, published in 1973. This book demonstrates that Pynchon deploys techniques associated with the decentering of the linguistic sign and the fragmentation of narrative in order to work through the anxieties of white male subjects in their encounter with racial otherness. It also charts Pynchon’s attention to non-white and non-Euro-American voices and cultural forms, which imply an awareness of and interest in processes of transculturation occurring both within U.S. borders and between the U.S. and the Third World. In these ways, his novels attempt to acknowledge the implicit racism in many elements of white American culture and to grapple with the psychological and sociopolitical effects of that racism on both white and black Americans. The argument of Everybody’s America, however, also considers the limits of Pynchon’s implicit commitment to hybridity as a social ideal, identifying attitudes expressed in his work that suggest a residual attraction to the mainstream liberalism of the fifties and early sixties. Pynchon’s fiction dramatizes the conflict between the discourses and values of such liberalism and those of an emergent multiculturalist ethos that names and valorizes social difference and hybridity. In identifying the competition between residual liberalism and an emergent multiculturalism, Everybody’s America makes its contribution to the broader understanding of postmodern culture.

Review
"Witzling reads texts well, but his special contribution lies in his grasp of contemporary theory and those conundrums of race in which the younger Pynchon's imagination was anchored in the 1950s and 1960s...this is an original contribution to knowledge of Pynchon and the role of race in American culture." From Python basics to writing standalone applications using the QGIS API
By Anita
On 200 pages, Gary Sherman takes the reader from Python basics to creating standalone applications using the QGIS Python API. The book manages to strike a great balance between basics for those who are new to programming for QGIS and more advanced content and insider information for more advanced readers. Gary also took care to make his instructions usable on Windows, Linux, and Mac.

Here's an overview of what the book covers:

1. Introduction ... covers requirements, where to find sample data and code, plus some house keeping
2. Python Basics ... talks about language basics, how to install packages, and where to learn more
3. Setting Up Your Development Tools ... getting Python, IDE and Qt/PyQt ready
4. The QGIS/Python Ecosystem ... insights into the world of QGIS Python plugins
5. Navigating the QGIS API ... how to work with the existing documentation, and an introduction to signals and slots
6. Using the Console ... loading and manipulating data from the Python console
7. Running Scripts ... more about scripting
8. Tips and Techniques ... dealing with raster and vector files and databases, creating custom tools, display messages
9. Extending the API ... creating custom functionality
10. Writing Plugins ... combine GUI and PyQGIS code in your own plugin
11. Creating a Development Workflow ... developing and debugging
12. Writing a Standalone Application ... creating new applications with maps ands tools
13. Answers to Exercises
14. Appendix A: Installing Software
15. Appendix B: Code Listings
16. Appendix C: Porting Scripts to 2.0

A good beginners/intermediate book for programming with QGIS
By Russell Fulton
Personally I found the book a bit low level but then I am a very experience programmer and most of the target audience will be GIS folk who do programming on the side. I judge it well suited for this audience. It covers the concepts well and includes a brief introduction to Python. I would have like to see a reference section to the API but then I'm old fashioned -- these days it is arguably better to keep your API docs on line since they change. That is fine so long at that documentation is good and kept up to date

A Great Walkthrough
By Aurelius
Excellent book for learning the how python extends QGIS. This book was easy to follow and having very basic python knowledge helps but is not necessary. Also a great walkthrough for writing plugins and standalone apps.

The Friendliest and Most Effective Planning System I've Ever Encountered
By Leigh A. Brown
I've used Leonie's planner for 3 years now, always printed off in (alas) black and white. Imagine my uncontained excitement to learn there would be a printed/bound copy, IN COLOR, available this year! Unlike many of the commenters here, I have not been attempting to build a business; in fact, the opposite. I've used Leonie's planning system to assist in my goal of simplifying and honing in on what is of truest value to me. I guess that IS a business plan of sorts, though, when I think about it. Another commenter here said the insights are things 'you could probably make up yourself' -- the funny thing about it? I sometimes don't find I listen to myself when it tells me these things; the colorful, enlivened, heartfelt insights Leonie offers are echoes, reiterations, that help and remind me to tune into my own voice. I've been following Leonie and all her subsequent steps since her introduction on the web, on her blog. Here is a woman who champions other women championing themselves, and offers whatever she can to assist and encourage those individual journeys. Her 'academy' isn't a cult; it's a living room on the Internet full of women who are seeking, each with an individual path and unique challenges, but it's a place filled with love and safety. These workbooks are just an extension of that vibe and an outpouring of that mojo. As with all things 'planner' - you get out of it what you put into it, and Leonie has no ownership of that - we each do. Your commitment to (and personal magic mix) is what brings the ultimate life to this planning opportunity.

Cute workbook, but don't fall for the "Academy"
By Suka
I revised this review in January 2014, as the price of the workbook had significantly increased since I first wrote it in November 2013. I didn't end up publishing it then due to procrastination and perfectionism reasons, so here it is now, in March, imperfect. I've added a detailed description of the workbook as well as updates about Leonie Dawson's Academy refund policy.

As in my original review, I dedicate a fair bit of space covering the topic of membership in Leonie's "Amazing Biz & Life Academy," since a large portion of the workbook is dedicated to promoting the Academy, and at the time I first wrote the review, hardly any critical information about Leonie's products were available elsewhere on the web.

The workbook is very simple (not much text), colourful, with a peace-and-love, positive-affirmation style of vibe. It's a fun exercise for making plans for the following year. This is the first year it's available in print, making it more useful than the PDF versions available in previous years.

It probably should have been printed half the size and double the thickness (i.e. A5 format instead of A4), and spiral-bound, so that it would be easier to write in and easier to carry around in a purse or bag. As it is, it's a soft-cover book roughly 8.5" x 11", about the size and thickness of a magazine. (Note: If you're thinking of buying the PDF virtual versions from the author's website, to print yourself, here are the specs, which are currently not available on Leonie Dawson's website: Life Edition: 74 pages including cover, 9 of which are self-promotion; Biz Edition: 55 pages including cover, 9 of which are self-promotion).

Nearly 8% of the 116 pages in the printed version are used to promote some of Leonie's other "products" which are all virtual. As a former member of Leonie's Academy, I only have the PDF version of the workbook, since she doesn't provide members with the hard copy (even for the exorbitant membership price), so I spent a fairly large amount of time printing, cutting, and gluing the pages into a spiral notebook so I could fill them out. It costs a lot of money in terms of ink, paper and glue (I went through 3 glue sticks), who knows -- maybe enough to justify buying the printed version of the book. No, I don't live near a Staples or other print company, and yes, I looked online for printing options but the prices were $30 and up with shipping included. Leonie's suggestion (written in an introductory page in the beginning of the book) is to put the pages into a ring binder or folder, but that didn't appeal to me.

The text of the 2014 workbook is nearly identical to the text of the 2013 workbook, but all the artwork (page decorations) are different. The 2013 version looks more arty and handwritten while in the 2014 version, the text is typed. If you have an older version (PDF file) of the calendar and are short on funds I recommend just reprinting that one and use it for the new year.

Most of the pages have one or two questions on them e.g. "This year I promise to myself that I will..." and "2014 will be the year that...", surrounded by pretty, female-oriented drawings, and the rest of the space is for the purchaser to fill in with his/her answers to the questions. There is a separate calendar for each edition (Life and Biz), NOT included in this print version of the workbook, which are downloadable from Leonie's website, but I'm not sure if or how the author allows this for non-"Academy" members.

If you do get access somehow, printing the calendars in a way that you can hang them on the wall is a challenge. I first tried to print them as booklets in Preview but that doesn't work, since the pages are formatted horizontally instead of vertically. After some experimentation, I finally printed one-sided sheets that I then glued into the back of the same spiral notebook that I put the workbook into. I then punched a hole near the edge of the back pages so I can optionally hang it on the wall the way a normal calendar hangs, but I'm still filling it out, so for now I just keep it on my desk. Basically, the calendars require extra costs in thought, time and money for printing in a way that's useful, and Leonie really should sell them as a printed item. If you can't get the calendar PDF, just use any standard calendar instead - hers are girly, fun, and hand-drawn and have positive affirmations throughout, otherwise it's the same as most other calendars except that you have to print it yourself so it's not really useful.

Now, on to Leonie Dawson's "Amazing Biz and Life Academy." Currently, the only way you can access the e-products advertised in the workbook is via membership in the "Academy" - i.e. you can't just buy one of them.

I fell under Leonie's spell about a year ago via a blogger friend who wrote an inspiring piece about Leonie Dawson's Goddess Circle. After visiting Leonie's website, I signed up for the free newsletter. Many months later, I allowed Leonie's clever email tactics to finally wear me down and I succumbed to her urgency marketing schemes, joining her so-called "Amazing Biz & Life Academy" (formerly the Goddess Circle) just before the much-promoted price jump from $199 to $497 which took place on October 1, 2013. Just two years ago, the "Goddess Circle" was only $99, for almost exactly the same products and services. I remember spending the whole year waiting for the price to go back down, and when she announced the price was in fact going up, I panicked. I ended up paying twice the price I thought it might be worth at the time -- so the joke's on me.

I now realize that my friend was one of Leonie's affiliates -- getting 50% of the profits from any sales referrals. Too bad for her that I didn't know this when I bought, or I could have used the link on my friend's site so that at least the friend could have benefitted from my excessive expenditure.

The friend privately admitted to me that she thought the new Academy prices were too high for what was offered. She had only paid $99 for the same products and services, back when the Academy was more appropriately branded the "Goddess Circle." I can only imagine how many of Leonie's affiliates are out there, promoting her products but not actually receiving any of the 50% promised, because it may take a week, months or even a year of getting Leonie's newletters for people to finally take the bait. Leonie promises a free "Biz and Blog Star Workbook" if you sign up for the newsletter, so of course most people will sign up for the newsletter and end up buying direct from her site, even though it was someone else's post that led them there.

About those newsletters... she uses pretty much every unscrupulous sales tactic in the book. She starts with the basic recipe of appealing to all the insecurities and negative feelings a self-help junkie might have, covers that up with a dose of 'I'm-just a super-generous hippie who figured it all out and now I want to spread my love throughout the world,' and then fires it with a dose of urgency -- so that in case money's tight, you'll be sure to get on that train. Here are some direct quotes: "The train is leaving the station. Are you on board sweetheart? Less than 24 hours to get in!!!" Thinking you can't afford her big price tag? She wrote a whole newsletter on how you should choose to "invest in yourself": Direct quote: "Instead of saying: I really want to do this but I can't afford it. Say: I really want to go to do this AND I will work out a way to afford it!"

If you happen to be in a depressed period of your life and are grasping at straws, she just might make you feel as though you'd gladly pay 500 bucks just to be in regular contact with what seems to be such a vibrant and caring individual. She writes: "The Academy is EVERYTHING I can give you to help you at the most GENEROUS, AFFORDABLE price I could possibly offer. Why did I set it up? I hate seeing you in pain. I hate seeing you struggling. I hate seeing you not being able to have your own gorgeous, peaceful, happy life. I hate seeing you creatively blocked. I hate seeing you struggling with creating an income from their gifts. I hate seeing you crazy overworked, underpaid, energetically depleted. I hate it because I KNOW it can be different. It is absolutely doable and possible."

This is a classic case of a seller that over promises and under delivers. Leonie says again and again that she only works a couple of hours per day. It's obvious now that most of that small amount of time is spent on marketing, mostly via her newsletter -- not actually improving some of her now out-dated products which were originally created years ago, when blogging was a new concept. Looking back, I now realize I was getting way more out of the newsletters than I got when I was a member of the "Academy." When you read her newsletters, you feel like you're her best friend. But if you join the Academy, you soon realize that she doesn't participate in the forums, except to promote things.

Leonie says she is constantly updating her products. Last year, as far as I could tell, two new items were added:

1. a video showing how to make a felted wool angel - a one-hour video that took longer than took half a day to download, and of which 60% or more featured her interacting with her toddler (cute but not relevant - fine to post for free on youtube but this unedited home movie is certainly not worth $21, as she said when she "gave" it to us members).

2. an e-course on how to run a 6-figure team. This one, unlike some of the older e-courses, is typed in an easy-to read font and is mainly text-based rather than artwork-based. The meat of this "course" is a 60-page "guide" that lightly covers topics such as when to hire, when to fire, and how to make your key staff members fall in love with you and never leave you. It's not terrible, but most of this information can be found free online. Also, the title of the book would be more relevant if it left out of the part about 6-figures. The 6-figure bit is just marketing hype since the book doesn't really talk about the difference between hiring a regular business team vs hiring a 6-figure team. About 10% of the book is dedicated to describing how she hired and managed to keep her Chief Operations Officer, Melissa Bracke. Ironically, Melissa Bracke mysteriously disappeared from Leonie's "team" after the publication of this e-book. The book, being only 60 pages, doesn't go into a lot of detail on any of the subtopics. For example, in the section on how to hire, Leonie writes "So I asked Marissa to come up with a sound, logical, analytical system for hiring. Which she did (AND LOVED CREATING, BY THE WAY! Oh the joys of having someone with opposite gifts to you!)" ...but unfortunately this hiring system is not shared with us in the book.

Her other e-books, or rather portions of books separated out into e-course format (since that's the way they used to be offered before Leonie formed the Goddess Circle / Academy) are downloadable PDF's, many of them using a large handwriting-style font, with lots of drawings and decorations. Pretty to look at onscreen, but not readable on Kindle. Expensive to print (uses a ton of paper and ink for not much content), and inconvenient to read -- who likes leafing through a stack of A4's? None of the old products have been upgraded to make them readable on Kindle or other reading devices - so you're stuck reading them on your computer screen or printing them all out, which is extremely costly. With the massive increase in membership price, you'd think Leonie could shell out a few bucks towards that project, since it likely won't be her doing the upgrades what with her minimal work hours.

The forums are practically dead, as there is a no-negativity policy. Leonie has written a whole newsletter on how to get fired as her client, and in the welcome video for new members she spends a fair bit of time (surrounded by an angelic background glow) begging us to understand that she will not tolerate negative comments of any kind. Some members complained about the lacking services and their memberships were instantly revoked, with no refund provided (google GOMI Leonie Dawson for more details). It felt like a scam or a cult.

Leonie's interaction on her own forum is virtually zero so don't expect to connect with her by joining the club. Her academy guides, which appear to be mostly volunteers, run the forum topics -- which means to say, they try to instigate conversation, but also end up providing most of the responses, since not many members actually interact -- a fact that I think is due to Leonie's no-negativity policy, and due to the general unspoken lack of satisfaction on the part of most of the members, who are forced to remain silent if they wish to remain members.**

NO REFUNDS: When I first wrote this review in November, there was an absolute "no refunds" policy. Since then, it has been brought to Leonie's attention that her policy went against Australian law (people have talked about it on GOMI). Leonie has recently updated her policy slightly to make it more legal - now the policy is officially "There are NO refunds for Academy memberships except where required by Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Law." But if we think about it, any self-respecting e-course provider will back legitimately useful products and services with a satisfaction guarantee. I consider myself duly educated -- no satisfaction guarantee equals no satisfaction, guaranteed.

*** Note: see the end of this review for an another update on the refund policy

One thing I've learned is that if I want to run a successful business that retains its integrity and thus allows me to retain mine, I simply cannot follow Leonie's pyramid-style, swindling business model. Her business goddess course includes "the magic money making kit." The key concept of the "kit" is a simple formula - the key question being "How much money do you want to make this month?" And the main part of the answer being "how we can make other numbers (number of people, number of price, number of income streams) add up to that number. like monopoly, or sudoku, or connect four. lining up the pieces, dots, paper, numbers. it's just a number, whether it is $200 or $20000. and it is a fun game to play in. There is no wrong answer when it comes to this question. You can play for $100. Or you can play for $10 000...." She continues on to explain how to make your income meet this goal. Mainly, by increasing product prices.

But this doesn't make sense. Pricing should be based on a balance of cost (how much it costs to make and deliver the product), market demand (how much people want the product), competitor pricing, and desired profit. It has to be reasonable. You can't just think, this year I want to double my income. What should I do? Well double (or quintuple) my prices of course! This solution is not sustainable. You'll have people giving in to your marketing hype, then regretting their decision, and ultimately writing 10-page negative reviews in hopes of warning others about a potential scam. (Case in point.)

Thank you Leonie, I did learn something from your "Academy" after all. If I want to truly help people and make a positive difference in the world, I won't get greedy and won't oversell. I won't be too lazy or too busy with my personal life to improve my business, yet expect people to pay exponentially increasing prices for it. Karma will always get you in the end.

The worst of it is that at the time I rewrite this review (January), Leonie has just sent out a mass email imploring people to refer non-profit organizations that she could "donate" her PDF (non-print) workbooks to. Maybe she thinks this will make her seem generous and charitable. And perhaps it would, if she were sending the print version instead of the PDF version, and if she didn't include nearly 10 pages of product promotion in each workbook. Instead, it seems she is now preying on those that are least fortunate, and most likely to fall for her "life-changing" marketing ploys. Those people who have the least resources to be able to support it.

The lovely "Goddess Circle" concept that Leonie started with has morphed into something else - something, it seems, more akin to an empire of greed.

In a nutshell, if you want to learn how to swindle thousands of struggling entrepreneurs (or any other hopeful dreamers) out of a few hundred bucks in order to make your millions quick, and you don't mind inconvenient book formats, you should definitely fork out a few hundred of your own and join the author's "academy". Otherwise, steer clear.

Previously, my advice was to buy the workbook, but skip the membership. Now that the workbook is priced at nearly $30, I say skip it all. Save yourself some heartache and a lot of money. There are other planners out there, more affordably priced.

Google "GOMI Leonie Dawson" for some uncensored opinions on the "Academy."

** Update March 2014 - as I understand it, Leonie is currently moving the forum to Facebook, and may close her forum on the Academy website.

*** Update March 2014 -- After months of heartache over having felt swindled by joining the "Academy," I wrote a short polite email to Leonie's team (obviously no threats, also no mention of this review) stating that I was unhappy with the membership and why, asking for a refund. To my extreme surprise, I was granted one within a few hours, in spite of the "no refund" policy. Something for those of you in a similar position to try...

A rip-off! Not useful and not worth the high price!
By Paula W
As soon as I pulled the book out of the package and flipped through it I knew I was going to return it. Sure, it's pretty. That's what I wanted--a lively organizer/planner that would guide me through my life and business goals for 2014. I did research too. Read the reviews. Went to Ms. Dawson's site. I concluded that her program was not for me, but that her workbook might be. But I was wrong. It's pure fluff. It's pretty thin; around 100 pages--a dozen or so are spent advertising Ms. Dawson's products and site. The book is divided into two halves: "life" and "biz." But each of those halves are divided in half, the first parts being a recap or "closing ceremony" for 2013. That means half of the book is spent reflecting on last year. I get doing a "post-mortem" is important; drawing from lessons learned and celebrating the high points, but half of the book? I want to spend my energy planning ahead, not looking back!

OK. So the part that does look ahead, well, it doesn't really have much robustness. It's like a fill-in-the-blank diary of what you want to accomplish and how you want to accomplish it. Maybe some people want that. I do not. I art journal and there are tons of journal prompt books far less costly than this book. I wasn't looking for that here. I was looking for something to help me set goals, plan, and help me keep my personal and business life balanced. No hints or tips are in this book. Just pretty pictures and boxes for you to fill in. For example, on the biz side: "Write how much you want to earn in the box below. How will you do that?" and "How many Facebook followers do you want to have?" Nothing follows about how to achieve this or why I would want to.

In short, it's a very expensive dream/wish journal. Not even on high quality paper. There is a link provided where you can download a "bonus" monthly calendar, but you can't just download it, you have to give out your name and e-mail address. And of course, you have to use up expensive ink or toner and if it is to be of any kind of quality, photo paper. Why bother?

I would avoid this book at all costs. Guaranteed it'll be on the bargain bookshelf within a few weeks!
